Crossing my fingers...

epifanatic

acoustically suspended
Started a new job a couple of weeks ago and made everyone aware that I collect vintage audio. Yesterday one of the guys in the shipping dept. and I were talking and he says, "you know, I have this old Pioneer thingy in my garage, it's about the size of a suitcase and weighs about 100 lb's". (1250, 1980???):yikes::scratch2: "you can have it if you want it" "I'll see if I can dig it out this weekend". "Oh BTW, there's something that says Marantz on it also. It has some kind of spinny thing to change the radio stations":banana: With the luck I've been having lately I'm due for a gift from the audio gods.....let's hope!

An often overlooked avenue leading to vintage equipment. "Talking it up" is the best...... and reaps benefits more often than not.

Hope you get a couple nice items out of the deal ! :thmbsp:

I found out that the Pioneer is a QX-9900, he hasn't found the Marantz yet. He's bringing the Pioneer in on monday....pics to follow.

Wow..that thing has SIX meters. Everybody will have meter-envy when they see it. Congratulations!

OOoooooh, cool 'score' there! :thmbsp:

It really shows how much it can pay to just LET PEOPLE KNOW about your interest in old audio gear!

I learned that the hard way when carrying some old gear past a fruit stand near my home. The owners (who knew me because I bought fruit there) told me they had just (I think they said three days previously) sold their vintage Luxman set-up which had cost them a LOT in the seventies, for peanuts. They would have given it to me, instead, if they had only known I'd be interested.

You never know who has old gear, LPs, etc... tucked away...or whose Grandfather does... so TELL people of your interest, and ASK them if they know where any old audio stuff is. You won't get the lucky returns like this if you don't plant the seed.

Seed VERY well planted, epifanatic!

Hhhmmm, I'd apply for more jobs if I knew which ones came with perks like that! :D

That's not half bad! I put an ad in the paper for old stuff recently, and it's lent me my M-120 and Sony monitors for free and my L-120 for 180€. That's pretty much 1000€ worth of equipment!

Talking to people and putting local ads is a sure way to win in vintage.

first pics

Just got the QX-9900, sorry about the bad cell phone photos. It powers up, going to need some bulbs replaced. At work now so no way of checking for sound but, the tuning meters work, all knobs and buttons are there. Some one spliced (poorly) a polarized A/C cord onto it. One scratch on face plate, not too bad. Can't wait to get it home and cleaned up.

Looks in pretty good shape to me, and I find it quite nice looking, too. Hope it sounds as good as it looks.

Those were standard with Pioneer for a while. You can get them, at a fairly high price off ebay, as I did, or alternatively, you could PM Luvvinvinyl ( Ernie ) and ask him to point you to a previous thread where he has shown a much cheaper alternative that requires some simple work.

There was once a polarized AC plug that had the blades in a T configuration, wonder if that would fit? Or, if there is an AC receptacle the same size as those square sockets you could replace them and use standard AC plugs. failing that, a piece of lucite and four banana jacks is not out of the question.

Very nice, you'll have to let me come over some time and hear this Pioneer "thingy". :thmbsp:
