Crossover Identification-Focal woofers, Morel tweeters

I took these crossovers out of a pair of home made speakers. I don't know the value or how to describe them. Whenever I have ever sold crossovers I would just say they were crossovers from whatever speaker (Polk XX-123's). How do I describe these? Can I figure out what they are capable of by looking up the parts? They look huge to me and heavy. 20190821_181001.jpg 20190821_181023.jpg 20190821_181041.jpg 20190821_181109.jpg 20190821_181127.jpg 20190821_181141.jpg 20190821_182918.jpg 20190821_182043.jpg 20190821_182157.jpg 20190821_182224.jpg
The speakers had Focal 6V3211B woofers and Morel DMS29 tweeters

Crossover says “Madisound”, they have a web site. The apparently sell spear kits, components, cabinets, etc. maybe these are kit components. If you contact them they might have specs, info.

Good luck!

They are 2nd order crossovers, for 2-way loudspeakers, using Bennic poly caps. Decent parts, but nothing boutique. You can see the values on 3 of the 4 coils and capacitors. You could enter those numbers into an on line crossover calculator, and get a guess at the crossover frequency. Measure the tweeter and woofer impedance. You'll need that for the calculator too.

OK... I found a couple calculators. I don't see one that has "2nd order Bennic" I see "2nd Order Linkwitz, Butterworth, Bessel". Will one of those work or do I need to keep looking of a calculator that lists Bennic? Also I looked up the specs the woofer is 6 ohms & the tweeter is 8 ohms. What number am I looking for on the caps & coils? Then what? Just add them up? I appreciate the help, I enjoy learning this stuff.

Bennic is the brand name of the polypropylene capacitors on your crossover boards. It's not a type of a crossover calculator. So, you can try playing with the "Linkwitz, Butterworth, Bessel" calculators that you found, to see which matches closest to what parts are on your boards.

You really can't tell much from online calculators. As far as these crossovers, they aren't much good for anything serious other than the Focal/Morel drivers for which they were designed.

ALL the crossovers I've sold and MOST of the crossovers on eBay are right out of a specific make/model of speaker so people know what they want and what they are getting. But I see custom crossovers sold all over eBay, Parts Express, Madisound, Amazon just to name a few. So people do make these and other people do buy them. All the ones on Madisound sell for at least $60 a piece. I sent Madisound an email with some pics maybe they will be more help than you guys. I enjoy buying these things and learning about them and fixing some things and selling others. I've sold a lot of things that people were really grateful to get. I recently sold a pair of Def Tech tweeters that the guy had been looking for for a long time (at an affordable price) but that was only $30... probably not serious....

Since you're discussing parts value, and the selling of parts, this thread should be moved to Dollars & Sense.

Also, everything on your crossover boards can be researched on line at Madisound. Pricing included. Those 4 capacitors sell new for about $12 bucks total. The coils, maybe $30. Resistors, a buck or 2 each. Again, new pricing. So, price accordingly.

Oh, sorry that we couldn't have been of more help...

I do this because I enjoy learning about this stuff. I thought a place called AudioKarma would be a place where I could learn from like minded individuals. I would make a lot more money by just working overtime.

Primary prohibition:
ANY discussion or mention whatsoever, no matter how subtle, of anything that you intend to sell, or anything in which you have any involvement is absolutely forbidden. As in every AK forum, off-topic rants, thread-crapping, and showing lack of respect for other members will not be tolerated.

I don’t know what you were looking for. Someone to write up your eBay description for you?

Two possibilities: one, they're a stock Madisound crossover, and you just have to find which one it is, so you can reference their part #. Two, they're individually created, and you'll have to record the values you have, and diagram what connects to what, so you can reverse engineer the crossover points.

Hopefully, its the first, and you can pore over Madisound's web site to find the match.

Then you'll have to significantly underprice the mfgr, so you might be looking at $20 for the pair when all is said and done.

That's a lot of work to squeeze the lemon. Or, if the OP has a sweep and a 'scope, he could measure where the crossover point is. Even then, it's not worth it. I've broken up several pairs of Madisounds for the tweeters and tossed the rest.

A 2.7 mH inductor is not cheap, or the other air core one on that board. Very useful for homebrew crossovers. And there are people who would just use an off the shelf crossover in a homebuild, or PE wouldn't have so many of them for sale, despite the sonic benefits of custom design. In any case OP could sell these as is, listing the values of any parts that have them, and buyers can decide how to use them. Crossover frequency would be nice if it can be estimated, shouldn't be too hard with the 2.7mH/16 uf cap combo. I can't see a value on the air core inductor so the tweeter circuit can't be calculated, but good chance it's close to the same.

Sam, please send all discarded crossovers and woofers to me for proper disposal.

Sticking my neck out here, and there's a 99% chance I'll screw this up, but here's a very rough diagram of what I see on the board (two 10 ohm R's in parallel combined to one 5 ohm, and I had to guess on the tweeter coil since I don't see a marking). Maybe a crossover around 1k - 1.1k? The curve becomes a lot flatter if the tweeter is a 4 ohm driver, but specs I can find suggest the Morel is an 8-ohmer. Edit: looks like most of these parts are listed on the Madisound site; the resistors are not, which is why I'm guessing at the value on those. The crossover as a whole is not listed in the 'assembled' section. Edit 2: Yep, screwed up. Tweeter voltage is after the R pair, reposted graph. Crosses at around -8 dB, 1167hz

Cool. Any chance the two resistors are an L-pad? One parallel to the tweeter, one in series? Kinda high ohmage for that maybe.
