Crossover prototype with cheaper components

Would there be any harm in using cheaper components to prototype a from scratch crossover? Getting the right values then building with higher quality or would there be too much variation between the two?

No harm at all if you're trying to perfect the layout or circuit. Could also be very instructive to create 1 or 2 low cost versions, then compare them with higher cost "audiophile" components and see if you "hear" any difference - certainly would be a nice experiment, especially if you have someone else switch the crossovers in real time, and you and some friends are the test subjects.
