CROWN DC300A - Output / Driver Transistors & other

Hi all,

I'm refurbishing my CROWN DC300A and I need to replace some of the output and drive transistors.

In my crown I have the following :

  • Outputs : RCA 62085
  • Drivers : RCA 3626
I've been searching around the forum and I've seen people using MJ21194 for the outputs.

However for the drivers, I did not come to a conclusion which ones would be the best.
I know some people used MJ15024 for the drivers, but while the amp work, distortion and oscillation will be the end result.

Can someone help me?

And since I'm doing this overhaul what other critical components would you recommend to replace?

The service manual I looked at for a DC300A shows the Crown Part Number of 3626 as a 2N5804 (driver transistor) and the Crown Part Number of 3773 as a 2N3773 (output transistor) now has a G at the end I believe.
Check serial number / board numbers to verify what you have / need. The service manual calls it out.

Looks like what you have depends on the serial number of the unit as there were some different board numbers used depending. So you'll have to look at that too in order to get the right parts.

Indeed the original output and driver transistors as in the photo are the original ones.
It doesn't match with what is in the service manual.

I would like to know what would be the equivalent references for RCA 62085 (outputs) and RCA 3626 (drivers).

I've contacted crown support and they were unable to provide any information in regards to this.
 
I think I've used the same transistors for drivers and output some years ago. But usually drivers are faster transistors with lower Watt and Ampere ratings.
 
thanks for the replies. Yes I need to adjust the bias when changing the transistors.
But would someone know where I could find equivalent references for these transistors RCA 62085 (outputs) and RCA 3626 (drivers) ?
 
I think those RCA numbers are some Crown internal number put on them. This is a guess on my part but I think the 3626 might be a 2N5804 and the 62085 might be a 1B05. Again just a guess.
 
I can help you with original transistors and other parts if needed.
I have the original 2N3773 s and I can match gain for you.
I have used them in Phase Linear 400 and 700. Bryston 3 and 4B's and Crown amps for years.
I can even send you a picture of one cut open so you can see the size of the die.

This place is a good source for hard to find and obsolete parts.

FYI, 2N3773 is posibly going EOL. Mouser has 10 varinats of 3773 of which 6 are zero stock and 2 of the 4 remaining marked EOL. .
I built a few crown clones adn variuants with the 3773 and the complementary 2n6609 back in the 80's in college.
I am substituting the 3773 for some obsolete Fairdhild and Motorola OEM TO-3 transitors in the power supplies for Soundstream digital recorder that I am refubishing/reviving.
