Crown SX722 ideas.

I have a chance at getting a Crown SX722. I know the build quality is supposed to be "built like a tank". I have many reel to reel decks but don't have a Crown. Any ideas on the sound quality of these decks? Does anyone own and use the SX722? Would like some feed back and your experiences.

This unit burns through tape being a half-track machine, but it will sound excellent if it is working correctly.

Should sound phenomenal. Half track, so your sound quality (and tape usage) will be incredible :D

Go Get it!

Let me see. Half track means one can only record on one side? I guess these only play at 15ips? I guess I really don't know much about these decks. :D

I could live with that. One side full track. I'm game. Will have to try to get one of these.

One side full track would be a mono machine with a single full track taking up the tape.

Gets interesting talking all the possibilities.

This machine probably has more than one speed. Where the combo would be 3-3/4/7½ or 7½/15, I don't know and it may have been a purchase option. Heck maybe it is a three speed machine. I'll have to check my literature.

Technically, the Crown machines were broadcast station grade quality. They were built to very high levels of quality and reliability. And Missionary Tough in the great Clarence Moore tradition. His first Crown products were tape recorders.

They were designed to operate 18 hours a day, seven days a week for 10 years with only routine maintenance.

They're very nice units.

With the Experiences i have had with both my Crown CX-822's i ould say that the 722 should sound pretty dam goo. Some gys even claim the Crowns to have better play back sound than stude Decks.

Yea. I was out on the web searching all morning looking for an operational or service manual. No luck. I even asked over in the digital docs section. Hopefully I will get a hit there. I would really like to get one of those 800 models. They hardly ever come up on the bay.

Well I just won the bid on ebay for a Crown SX722. Was kinda high but I wanted one. It said it worked on FF/Rev and Play but no other testing was done. How many times have you read that one. but it looks all in tact and should clean up nicely. It is set up as a 7 1/2 - 15 ips. Will get it in about 7 to 10 days. My heart is now setteling down. :D

I have been busy on the internet looking for a maint manual and schematics for this Crown. Some reading brought me to a site for Crown products. A small forum just for Crown reel to reels. I called a John Haines in Goshen IN. Apparently he worked for Crown many years and has much of their records, parts, and anything to do with Crown reel to reel tape decks.

He gave me his address and email. $27.50 for the maint manual and schematics. He also said he has the correct belts and NOS heads as well as a host of other things.

A delightful man to talk with. I would love to visit his shop.

I gave him the S/N of the unit and he got the original warantee card out and read that it was purchased in 1971 to a guy in New Jersey.

We talked for a bit about what he sugested I do with the amplifier section. Recap them.

Needless to say I'm hyped about this new project. :thmbsp:

Well first of all I am posting this with my cell phone. So bare with me. I received the SX 700 yesterday. We are in a middle of a move to our new home too. The house is full of boxes and stuff but still wanted to open my new toy.

It was packed very well with no damages. I set it up to check its controls and operations. It works in FF RW and play. The meters move.

This is a big and I means big reel to reel machine. It is 85lbs. IT'S. Like the monolith from 2001 space Odyssey.

I will have to wait till the house is in order before opening the unit up. Can't figure out how to attach photos on my phone yet. But the phone company is hooking the internet and phone tomorrow. By for now. Signing off will turn my transmitte

rs on later.'

Clever move-get the toy during a time of many boxes flying back and forth with the move. One more will never get noticed by the Mrs.

Very clever, you are:thmbsp:

Oops got caught. I said it was a birthday present to myself. My GF asked if I was finished. I. Doubt if I will be done. She is getting some flowers and eat out tonight. She is the great organizer and is right now unpacking and organizing the house while I'm at work right now.:D

I did "that" with an MX5050 last Dec but w/o the S.O. to call me on it... for better or worst:smoke::music:
