Crown XLS 1002 Causing Hum In Circuit- help!

Hi There,

Just got a used Crown XLS1002. When plugged in to any outlet, strip, or power conditioner I have available near my receiver, it introduces hum (not hiss) into the speakers.

Using a new Integra 3.4 receiver.

Worthy of note- the Crown didn't come with a power cord, so I tried two three prong cables I had around that fit the unit. One from a PC, the other from... not sure but both work fine on other things.

I also plugged in an old QSC CX12 amp to see if it did the same thing and it doesn't. Any ideas?

Good thought. I have a Panamax power conditioner as well, though while troubleshooting I unplugged it and just had the receiver and amp plugged in. Tried different outlets, etc.

Yeah, but being an HT receiver it's probably connected to a TV or cable box or some other component that may be grounded.

With the amp itself connected to the speakers and powered on, but no cables from the receiver connected, is there still the hum?

Nope. Quiet without the RCA cables plugged in. A little hiss (I have to get right up next to the speakers to hear it) but no hum.
 
Also get the hum with speakers connected to the Integra receiver, but only when the Crown amp is also plugged in. When I unplug the Crown amp from the outlet in this configuration the hum goes away.

Actually in troubleshooting I unplugged stuff so it does this with nothing else plugged in.

Right now I have a marantz 2235 connected as a preamp via RCA to the CAB/Sat input. A marantz 6350 TT is connected to the 2235.

I have a Blu Ray player connected via HDMI.

Other passive speakers and a TV to the HDMI ARC enabled out. An SVS subwoofer connected to one of the sub outs.

Ethernet cables plugged in to TV and receiver.

I'm also using a panamax power conditioner but I've tested it in an out of the circuit and still hum.

OK- have done some troubleshooting. The QSC AND the Crown actually both caused hum. The amplifier and the power conditioner are the only three pronged devices. I used a cheater plug with the amp (3 prong to 2 prong adapter) and the hum was eliminated!

BUT- I've heard using these is a terrible idea, and I just did this for troubleshooting purposes. Would grounding the tab on the cheater plug to the Panamax MR4300 power conditioner be a good idea? Any better solutions?
 
FOUND THE CULPRIT!

Not sure why this happened but I unplugged the coaxial cable connecting my OTA antenna to my TV and PRESTO- no more hum! Not sure why this would matter and now need to figure out a solution to how to connect everything but still- major progress. Thanks for the assistance in troubleshooting!!!

You need to be sure the antenna cable is properly bonded to the house grounding system. That's a very common problem with cable TV if the incoming cable feed isn't bonded to premises ground.

Thanks- I'm reading up on it. Quick question- my antenna is a ClearStream indoor antenna attached to my whole house coaxial wiring. I don't see any way to ground the coax from the antenna end as it's not a metal mast type of product- should I just use a single grounding block and connect my house's ground wire to the block along with the coax cable?

EDIT- I am running it through a reception amplifier like this one- maybe that's what I need to ground?
