I'm considering pulling the trigger on a used (dirt cheap of course) XLS600 to drive a pair of EPI 202's. Is there any variance b/t the older XLS amps vs. the newer ones that I should be aware of? I'm noticing that the newer XLS amps are at least cosmetically different & some of power ratings on various models have changed? Any difference in performance or design?

Older XLS such as the XLS2-202 to XLS-602 use metal die T-03 outputs which are found in "home" amplifiers. Those are the models to look for, IMO.

this is helpful - can you tell me: if I use my existing yamaha amp as a pre-amp - will i be able to control the volume of the system through the yamaha? I've never used a pre-amp for my speakers. Any suggestions on cables / wiring this rig up? One of the speaker terminals needs to be replaced on the Crown so I was gonna simplify & pick up a pair of male speakon connectors rather than deal w. repairing the traditional speaker terminals - unless that's not optimal? thank you!

Are you sure about the 600 designation instead of being a 602?
The old XLS series are rebadged C-Audio designs, linear power supplies with big toroids and traditional A/B outputs (can't recall right now if they also incorporate g/h topologies).

If you get the amplifier, pop the hood and let us know the number and rating on the main filters.

Get it. Make sure it is not a "D" model. I have an XLS202 which is "only" 200 wpc and it will overpower any home speaker. The 602 is good for welding. Soundwise, these amps are ultra-signal accurate so the they will be crystal clear and fast.

IIRC, the x02 series has balanced inputs so you will need adapters for RCA use. Input wires are a hassle but it is worth the effort.

I see no "D" referenced on the front or back of the unit - good to go?

I believe they went through three iterations before going to the switch mode power supplies, IIRC.

As a general statement, "Pro" amplifier design, at least that aimed toward the casual consumer, has shifted from large mains transformers toward Class D designs to support customer demand (weight) and cost savings. There are hybrids and full switching models so certainly there are differences with models even from the same manufacturer. I've used mostly QSC and Crown over the years and both have performed well.

That said, I would consider input sensitivity first as most older equipment will have only balanced XLR or barrier strip inputs. It appears your candidate has XLR connectors. Non balanced RCA to XLR adapters are readily available but may not drive the amplifier to full output if your preamp is not capable. Consider fan noise and speaker connections also for a domestic installation.
