CS-77A tweeter (77-702F) original surround material question

Was the 77-702F tweeter's original surround material grey or brown? I've got a set to play around with and the rotted foam looks grey. Also, was the original foam material flat, or did it have the round shape we are used to seeing with foam surrounds? There is not enough original material left for me to tell what it used to look like, but it seems flat.

Many of the tweeters in online photos have been repaired black replacement foam made for a lot of movement, some have repaired with flat cloth, and there is everything in between. I've yet to see a good high resolution photo of one in good shape that I can be sure is original.

That's what I'm seeing. Also, it looks like there is no roll to the foam. It looks more like a flat cloth surround shape, but it turns to dust so we know its foam. This is the best pic I've seen of the surround. Does anybody make a flat foam surround? I've thought about making my own cloth surrounds, but I also have some standard rolled foam surrounds on order that should be here tomorrow. It's getting to be decision time. There was no color choice on the surrounds from Simply Speakers, so I was thinking about lightly airbrushing them to a light-medium grey like in the attached image. I don't think it would affect stiffness, especially with the minute movement a tweeter has. If anyone is wondering why I'm "obsessing" over the accuracy of a moderately decent sounding speaker, I'm not restoring these for audiophile sound. I'm restoring them for nostalgia, looks, cool factor, conversation, etc. Plus, I can't afford L-100's or HPM-100's. Lol

I doubt anyone would know or care if you used rolled surround instead of the original, unless they are really into audio gear.

True. If they were really into audio gear and bothered to say anything at all, they'd probably just tell me how $h!tty CS-77A's are. :eek:
 
Hey, if they sound good to you that's all that matters. I've owned the cs-99a, cs-77a and still own the cs-88a. I know the cs-XXa get a lot of flack for being bass shy.
 
I have repaired many as Pioneer tweeter, and yes it's hard to tell if flat or otherwise from the remains, but I believe they were originally flat. I have always used a 3" or 3 1/2" foam surround cut down to fit properly, can't remember which at the moment. There are multiple threads out there, but I'll try to find an example of my repair.

As for the Pioneer bass it does lack at low volume, but give them some juice and it is adequate. Also, the "A" suffix models are better in my opinion. Good luck with your repair.
