CS-88A project speakers...

Pair of 88a's came up on the local marketplace. Yes they came back from Vietnam. I went and looked at them. They were asking 40 bucks for them. If they were working I would have picked them up. Ended up they were not. Only the mids were working. Woofer and tweeters were not working at all. Super tweeter I'm not sure. Also a refoam would be needed. The orig owner said he would go for 30. I declined because I have enough projects. I keep thinking about them though. I've never done any work on speakers. I figure they could be a good learning set. I know these speakers get a 80/20 split on here. 80 percent say they are crap 20 likes them quiet alot. They definitely would be a improvement over the Optimus they would be replacing. What would peoples guess as to the reason for non working drivers on both speakers? I don't want to have to invest too much money into them. So if that would be the case I will prolly pass.

Plenty of replacement parts available. if the cabinets and grills are mint, they are' not bad with upgraded x-overs, worth it to you???

Depends on what Optimus. I had a set of CS88s that I had recapped and the best I could describe them as was mediocre. Not that great in the highs and the bass was a bit rolled off. The Optimus 5s I had would smoke them any day.

What Optimus speakers do you have? The CS 88s I had were mediocre at best and mine worked perfectly and were re capped. Handsome and well made but only sounded ok. I have a lot of RS speakers that sound a lot better.
 
I am listening to my Nova 7Bs right now and remember how much better they sound than the CS88s.

I could never find the right combo of room, amp and music for them. I did figure out a big room was probably needed to get them to shine.
 
Here is some info on the Optimus STS 1230. Came out around 1999.
