I recently replaced the belts on my 9191, cleaned capstans, tires, rollers, etc.
Now I'm having issues. The symptoms: Plays 3-10 seconds, then stops; plays at high speed - makes the Eagles sound like the Chipmunks; plays, take-up reel stops, then play stops; FF & Rewind seem to work properly. It does not seem to matter where the counter is, and the counter seems to be working properly. Where do I start?

Simplest stuff 1st:

Rotate the takeup reel, and make sure that the tape counter moves with it. This is to make sure that the counter linkage is all installed properly.

Make sure that the pinch roller makes good contact with the capstan. The capstan sets the tape speed. If the contact is not good, but take up torque is good, the tape will slip by the capstan at a higher rate than the capstan would drive it.

Enjoy,

Rich,
Thanks for the information. Will check it out using your instructions. Hope it's really that simple.
