Custom wood case for a Concept receiver

Hi AK gang,

I have recently been digging into the wonderful world of vintage audio, and I have found myself with a handful of receivers. I've got a Concept 2.5, a Concept 4.5, and a Yamaha CR 820. I love them all in their own way :) But when it comes to looks, I am crazy about the Yammie (pic attached).

My question is, does anyone out there make wood/veneer cases that I could slide a Concept receiver into to give it that walnut cabinet look? I like the face of the Concept and the warm-lit tuner dial. Adding a nice wood case, with some wood showing on the front like the Yamaha, would be a great combination for this budding stereo nerd.

I see lots of cool wood cases for Marantzes, but haven't had any luck finding something for the Concept. Any ideas of where I should look?

There are at least a couple folks on this forum that might build you one. Or shoot this guy an email http://mcintoshcabinets.com/pages/mcintosh.htm Or just take the gear to a local cabinet maker, let him get his measurements, and wait a week or two...or three...or....
Watching the ususal auction sites and want ads might be a long, frustrating experience.
 
I was going to suggest McIntosh Cabinets but according to their website they only make for Marantz, Fisher, McIntosh and HH Scott.

Mind you, it wouldn't hurt to send an email and inquire. They do fabulous work (no affiliation).
 
You could also go to the 'bay, and just look for cases that have dimensions described, and maybe you'd luck out. Some of that stuff has a working piece of gear with a decent case in the $50-100 range.
 
While real wood veneer over the factory enclosure might be the best option, it won't be the cheapest for sure. While I have considered this very thing for my Concept receivers, I and leaning toward removing the vinyl wrap and replacing it with wood look contact paper. I have done this on a Sansui 7070 with excellent results and I'm currently doing the same on a Yamaha CR-1040. Finding a decent wood color/pattern is not easy, but I've never been all that jazzed about the factory vinyl that Concept used on their receiver enclosures. Of course, this method would not get you the same look as the Yammie with the wood framing the face of the receiver, If the OP is set on obtaining that appearance, they will most likely need to find a local cabinet maker to custom build a cover for the Concepts.

Thanks for the suggestions. I saw that McI site, but he seems pretty adamant about working on "nothing else". Regarding others on the site who might be able to help, do you happen to remember anyone in particular? Otherwise I will dig around. Thanks!
 
Sorry, I've seen a few posts in the past, but didn't pay much attention since I wasn't in the market. Hopefully someone will pipe up.
If you think you might be hanging around this site for a while (and you probably will, it's sort of addicting), you could become a subscriber, which would give you access to Bartertown. Post a "Want to Buy" there...hey, wait, that reminds me...I think there was just such an ad not long ago. I'll check and see if it turned up any ideas or names...back shortly.
 
Concept receivers were the best bang for the buck back in the day. My first "real" stereo had a Concept 2.0 as it's heart. The 6.5 and 11.0 are said to sound as good as anything from Pioneer, Marantz or Sansui from the same years. Richard Schram, of Parasound fame, designed them as a house brand for Pacific Stereo.

I've never seen after market cabinets for any of the Concept line. However, IIRC, the original had real rosewood veneer over particle board, perhaps you could glue finished wood, of your desired thickness, over the original...

Yeah, I like my Concepts a lot. Nice rich, warm sound. The cases on mine are rosewood-look vinyl over plywood, rather than rosewood veneer. I also like the way the Yamaha has a wood frame around the face, rather than just silver.

PS: I see you're in Oakland. Me, too :)
