Recently fried a speaker in a guitar amplifier (Fender Hot Rod Deluxe) and went shopping for a replacement. I found a speaker I want, but suddenly second guessed when I looked at their specs side-by-side:
Cutout diameter, orig. speaker = 10.950"
(Eminence Legend 1258)
Cutout diameter, fried speaker = 10.906"
(Jensen P12Q reissue)
Cutout diameter, new speaker = 10.750"
(Weber California Alnico 12)
Hmm.
I remember when I bought the Jensen two years ago, I wasn't particularly worried about the cutout being .05" smaller than the speaker that Fender originally provided (which is basically an OEM 1258). I stopped before spending any money this time because the diameter of the part of the Weber speaker that should fit in the amp's baffle cutout is significantly smaller.
Provided I am able to mount it, will such a jump (downwards) in cutout size of speaker detrimentally affect the speaker's performance?
As I understand it (my understanding in a limited sense), problems would result from restricted airflow only if I moved to a speaker with a cutout diameter that is >greater than my enclosure's baffle cutout, not smaller.
Am I missing anything? Next step is to email Weber and see if anyone has put their speaker in my amplifier.
Thanks.
