CV R-26 speaker opinons

I have a chance to get my hands on a pair of Cerwin Vega R-12. They are in very nice shape except missing the foam grills.
Does anyone have a pair of these, had in the past or have had any experience with them?
I am looking for some opinions on the sound...

I am just a sucker for old walnut speakers :beatnik:

My dad bought R24s new - still has 'em. Great sounding speakers IMHO. I set him up with a McIntosh MA6200 integrated and put the speakers on a short, angled stand. We just couldn't believe how good they sounded.

Original woofers will be foam rotted. He had his serviced in the '80s and the shop put cheap Beckers in them and kept the originals. I swapped them out in the 90s as the Beckers were rotted then as well.
 
Thanks for the info link. I have not met with the seller yet, but the pic shows the model as R-26. I hope to get a look at them today or tomorrow.

Sorry all for the typo - it is the R-26 I am looking at, not the R-12 I posted in my original post.
 
Well I haven't heard those, but this guy has been listening to his for longer than I've been listening to my AT-15s (30 years). That's got to tell you something.
Cerwin Vega makes very good speakers. While they aren't for everyone, there are plenty of people that like them. The R-26s are from the 70's and from my understanding won't be as bright as their later stuff, but should still be very good for a wide range of music. I listen to a bit of almost everything and have never been disappointed.
One thing all CVs seem to have in common is that you don't need big power to get good sound at decent levels but the more you can feed them the more they sing.
One of the things I like about the CVs I have is they are very good at making every instrument sound distinct.

Of course, like any speaker, if you take your source to distortion they'll sound like crap. Since many people's only experience with CVs were college parties with cheap stereos cranked well beyond reasonable levels their first impressions were less than stellar.

I have driven mine all these years with a MC 250 fed by a C26.

Parts Express may have foam available that you could cut and fit. The original foam was mounted on a 1/8" sheet of plywood with holes cut out for the drivers. That plywood was held to the front with Velcro.

Thanks for the feedback! It does look like a project on a pair of DLK 1 1/2 that I had to make new fronts for a few years ago. I will check out PE and give Midwest a call, they had the pre-cut sheets for the DLKs.
 
I am SOOOO bummed.... dude decided AFTER I got there that he didn't want to sell them *#@%&

And the search continues for a pair of speakers to replace my Polk Audio RT12 in the basement system :(
