DAC decision Grant or Musical Fidelity

Hi

I'm looking to add a DAC to my current system. I using the new apple TV's optical out to an Marantz 2285. I'm excited to see how much of a difference there will be in sound quality when adding a DAC between the two. I read alot of the posts here and elsewhere. I'm considering the Grant Fidelity DAC 09 or the Musical Fidelity - V-DAC. Looks like there is a price difference of a hundred dollars between the two. (If I was to go with the Grant I could afford some nice headphones!)

I'm curious what peoples thoughts are or if there may be another DAC i'm overlooking.

Oh and my Marantz is hooked up to a pair of Klipsch KG4's if that helps.

Don't think I'd want to settle for less than the Arcam rDac. I suggest you get out and do some listening. There are a number of good DAC's and if you have access to a shop and opportunity to audition you may want to avail yourself of it.

I haven't heard the Grant Fidelity unit, but I have heard the V-Dac. It is far better than I had thought could be possible in that price range. From what i have read of the Arcam, it is no slouch, but I haven't read anything that gave me the impression that it was any better than the Cambridge or V-Dac, just a different voice for those who would prefer it. I wouldn't mind having one myself.

In the same price point you can have the MHDT Paradisea. I have that one too and it is a monster. Extreme high quality in my honest opinion.

The V-Dacs go for sale on Audiogon for about $250 and get snatched up within hours. If you got one on Audiogon, you could sell it easily. In my opinion, it has one flaw, in that compared to the two NOS Dacs I have, I find it to be a bit fatiguing. It's strengths are that it images three dimensionally like crazy and has a beautiful over all frequency response. It also presents more inner detail than any CD player I have heard under $2000. Do not underestimate the V-Dac.

If your speakers are on the rolled off side, like Bozak, Proac, Kef or KLH for example, than I don't think you will find the V-Dac fatiguing.
