I would check the cable and the optical output from the transport; it may not be connecting properly, which would result in a weak signal at the receiver.
Weak signal at receiver = intermittent or no sound.
[edit: I see it's a problem with coax and SPDIF. That makes cable unlikely. I'm not sure why the digital interface would be sensitive to level; it's just a bit position]
