Dad's old AU-555a

Hey guys, Inherited my Dads old AU-555a it has recently lost sound on the right channel - i can still hear VERY feint amounts of sound and a bit of static, it dropped in and out before failing completely, and ideas where i should start? was thinking about giving it a refresh while i have it open (Caps etc) worth doing?

Welcome to AK!

You have inherited one of Sansui's more popular amplifiers, congratulations

Re the problem you have with one channel dropping out, first off all controls and switches should be cleaned as the dropout can be caused by a dirty pot or switch.

If the cleaning doesn't improve things, then check the protection fuses located at the bottom rear (need to remove the bottom cover). Some times these can fail due to age. Also, if the problem persists, you can remove the pre out/main in jumpers on the rear panel, and use an RCA lead to connect the left out to the right in, and right out to left in. If the problem stays in the same channe, then the problem lies in the main amplifier section, if the problem swaps channels, then the problem lies in the pre amp section.

Haven't had much of a chance to look at it (just pulled it apart) but tearing into it I have found the speaker selector switch to be broken - is there anywhere to get these second hand or would anyone have one they are willing to sell? Superglue didn't work :(

I had a broken speaker selector switch, and used JBweld to reattach the lever. It's holding up, but I avoid flipping it as much as I can.
 
Yeah looked through the switches there cant see one :)

so after a bit of CO cleaner on the pots and managing to get the switch back together (i dont dare flick it) its working on both channels - however - i have to have the balance at about 2 towards the right channel to make them sound the same - is this normal or a sign that something is on the way out?

With ageing components it could be anything. Capacitors perhaps. If you have one of the earlier 555a's you may have the flying saucer signal transistors that I ALWAYS replace on sansui gear - it could be one of these failing as they get noisy and go out of spec with age.
