I am tempted... Looking to hook up to Sansui G-8700DB. Play mostly classic rock CD's. How do you think the combo would sound? Worth $1200?

Dahlquist DQ-10 with sub and crossover

I have here a choice set of Dahlquist speakers. A very nice clean pair of DQ-10s, with drivers properly refoamed. The electrolytic caps in the crossovers have been replaced, the tweeter level L-Pads have been de-oxited, and the area beneath the grilles has been cleaned. These come with the more desirable three column stands. They are mirror imaged from the factory. The wood and the grilles on the speakers is in nice shape, the wood on the stands is pretty good, but not flawless.
They work perfectly.
Included in the deal is the matching DQ-W1 subwoofer and DQ-LP1 electronic crossover. The sub is in perfect working order, the wood is in nice condition, the grille looks a touch sun-faded. The DQ-LP1 active electronic crossover has been fully recapped and all of the switches and pots cleaned. These are factory mirror imaged.
This is a totally turn-key, hook it up and go set of speakers in exceptional condition. They do not need any repairs/upgrades, they are clean and quite nice looking. Anyone who knows these speakers also knows how great they sound

I would say $500 w/o the electronic crossover, and the 1 was catching $300 to $350. $1200 is a stretch, but if you want it and have the cash...there aren't many around at a one stop shop. I would still say

Figure 250.00-500.00 for the DQ10's, the LP-1 I sold one for 350.00, and the sub in mint shape 200.00-300.00, on the high end 1150.00 / 800.00 all in excellent condition on the low. (I.M.O.) Deals are out there, my second pair DQ10,s I paid 60.00 in perfect working order, my first pair in the same condition with the LP-1 and a RHLabs massive (no joke) subwoofer for 200.00. Currently I am running my second pair of DQ10's each sitting on their stands sitting on top of their own dedicated accompanying RHLabs (no joke) subwoofer, bought the second RHLabs sub for 80.00 dollars in perfect shape. They have there own amp and that is why I sold my LP-1. The DQ set up you are looking at does look in sweet condition. Make a face to face offer with cash in hand lower then the asking price and go from there. Good luck! I forgot to comment on the sound and I will say it with one word (EXCELLENT!!!), again good luck.

I've heard DQ-10s...while the sub and matching crossover is rare, I honestly can't see how anyone would think they need a sub with DQ-10s. They have excellent bass by themselves. Excellent sounding speakers - don't know if they're worth all that though. Those original stands probably increase his value too since people tend to lose those. I still would say no deal on that price though - $800 seems more realistic, but sometimes sellers are convinced they will get their asking price (And eventually they may). Having cash in hand does wonders for negotation though...

You do realize the sub is passive, yes? It'll need its own amp. Personally, I think there are more cost-effective sub-wooferage options out there, but if you love Dahlquist stuff, that's understandable too.

When you add a sub or two, (one for each DQ10) with two mono amps or a two channel amp for both, either way with their own subwoofer pre-amp to control the bottom end you take it to the next level in making that full range goal complete. Think about the DQ's woofer now a mid-woofer and the rest of the array covering the highs with their own tone control or as I do run the DQ's with the tone defeat, man oh man that works for me. I have to say they do well the DQ10's on their own otherwise.

With the sub, DQ10s become a top end reference system. They can get loud and proud, but still be able to whisper clearly. My main beef with the Dahlquists is they can't pound without the sub.

My Thiel 3.6 setup is the only one to easily top the Dahlquists at their strong points, so I would try to negotiate with the seller after you pay him some respect and listen to them. That system will do wonders with the right amps and a high gain preamp. At $800 to $900, they would be in my crosshairs, so hopefully you two can do a little negotiating. Just don't blurt out a lower figure in your second sentence over the phone.:smoke:

Thanks for all the input. As per my original post, I would be mating the speaker system to a Sansui G-8700DB- obviously power o-plenty, but is this a good match? Its a 2 hour drive and definitely I am going to try to work the price down.

It is a plenty good match. I would think anything 80 watts or better would be good, the more the better but I have run them on less then 60 watts, they just come into their own at about 80 watts.

$1200 is over the top. I have this system except my DQ-10's are stacked. However, that being said, the sub is worth $200 and the cross-over is worth $300-350 but the DQ-10's are only worth about $400-500 tops. As someone else said better deals are out there BUT you have to wait for them.

But those prices are EBAY prices. I'd go something closer to$700- $800 for everything, at best.

I own Dq-10's and I go back a forth on weather or not I need a sub. It depends on the music really. Trying to mate a aftermarket sub with the dq-10s has overwhelmed me so I just avoid it.

I saw this ad and thought it was high. The value here is a pair of factory mirrored, re-capped Dq-10s and the active crossover. The sub is suppose to be so-so and you can get better, but then you have to find a good match. PITA. I would try to buy the Dq-10 and crossover and pass on the sub.

But then again if you watch the same criagslist I do then I would pass on this and contact the guy selling the stacked(4) dq-10's.

That would be frigging amazing and the price is a steal. Then you invite me to your house so I can be jealous.

I`d say worth a grand tops considering they`ve been freshened up and good to go for another 10-15 yrs before needing any service again. I have a pair myself in reserve which I setup and listen to occasionally. They`re worth about $300 to me, but not even close in condition to those as they`re all original w/o stands.

The DQ-10s image like nobody`s business and can really reveal the dynamic depth of a nice vinyl system. I had mine recently hooked up to a very musical Sansui AU-X701 100wpc int amp and the sound was nothing short of blissful. While they don`t have the lower end of my AR-9s (few do), with a sub I think it would rival them and likely produce a better overall sound quality. Would it sound as good as a mint set of NS-1000s? Probably to some. Folks pay a grand for those and sometimes nice AR-9s, so I say go for it if you can get them for that or less.

Beware of people that say that the sub "is supposed to be this or that" or not so great compared to my Bla Bla Bla sub. Have they actually had the DQ-1 in their system working with a pair of DQ-10s.

The sub is fantastic. It doesn't sound like most modern subs which seem to be designed more for shaking your home and pissing off your neighbors. The DQ-1 and crossover where specifically designed to be paired with the DQ-10 and really only the DQ-10.

The the DQ-1 like the DQ-10 is capable or truly nuanced reproduction of music.
The DQ-1 will get plenty loud and will shake the room if you play it loud but it will also send the ultra low frequencies of a stand up bass through the frame of your house effortlessly. ( placed mine directly on the bare hardwood floor)

I feel that my DQ-1 helped my DQ-10s sound more realistic. Like the band, group or artist was actually in the room with me. The sub puts that finishing detail of presence in the music.

There's something to be said about one stop shopping so if you're going to drive 4 hours to make an offer consider the fact that the sub alone will cost at least $100 to ship from anywhere. Don't even get me started on what it takes to ship a pair of DQ-10s.

I'd offer at or below 1K but go with the 1200 just in case the seller has better nerves than you.

You'll be glad you did.

Eric

I second that recommendation. Those are only the second pair I've seen stacked using the same stands as mine. That is a steal of a price.

I would just like to add that I purchased the sub and crossover from 62sunbeam for my DQ-10's and it makes an amazing difference in sound quality. The subs and crossovers are very hard to come by so if you can get a complete set at the right price then go for it. I would think that anything from $1000 down would be in the range for that setup.

So this is a pair of DQ-10s, the sub and an electronic crossover (the more desirable unit) offered. This system, I believe needs three channels of amplification, one for the sub. The DQ-MX1 is the passive crossover that takes two amp channels and splits them to the sub and main speakers.

I don't know if this crossover will take two amp channels and drive the DQ-10s and the sub. Ideally, this crossover would have two subs, needing two amp channels. It has outputs for that as well as center channel outs for single sub use.

Blue Shadow- you are correct this system requires a minimum of 2 amps. One 2 channel for the DQ-10's and at least a mono amp for the sub as it does have a summing output.
