This is your thread about your crappy sounding DQ-20s and I posted two links to address the crossover and the ferrofluid in the tweeter, issues that would cause the crappy sound. You shouldn't have to save the link, just use it. Your thread will be here.

There are two crossovers in the DQ-20 one to handle the woofer and one to handle the mid/tweet. Post pics of what you have and folks can comment on the parts that have to go...the electrolytic cap on the woofer board and what can stay based on what you actually have.

I would be doing the ferrofluid and the cap upgrade. DQ-10-20-30 are special speakers.

Thanks. This is an excellent example of the value of these forums and the communities they foster. I’ll do as you say — open up the units and post pics. I’m definitely up for a project like this and am generally a pretty good DIY-er. Plus I have other speakers I’ll use while the Dahlquists are down. Thanks again.

So you are telling us that it only took 41 posts in your thread to basically 'kick your backside' into doing this project?
We did not see your DIY acceptance or ability in your thread and don't know how you were going to do the work needed. Nice to see you can take this job on and see what you can make out of those speakers. The information is out there and as you stated you have ak to fall back if you have a problem or if providing updates to get more encouragement and suggestions as you move forward.

Once we see what you have for crossover components the recommendations for what needs to get remove and go in will follow.

Hah, yes -- only 41. But hey, at least it wasn't 50 -- or 42. And besides, my backside is used to getting kicked (I'm twice married).

actually it was way less. Your double post, last page one and first on page two are your first complaints about the sound of the speakers.

We don't test the crossover, just update it. As to regnar, the DQ-10 cap kit is 225 and I bought very similar caps from a seller in Barter Town here on ak selling speaker company close out parts. I paid about 40 might have been 60 if I had bought from a regular vendor same caps. My 10s were all electrolytics (early models) and I went to all film.


sharp eyed folks will say the 80µF cap lower left in the second crossover hasn't been changed. Different supplier so had to order, had to wait, used a bypassed new electrolytic cap and then went to a film cap, too large to mount there it is off board now. That cap, used was about what I paid for all the others, but it feeds the mid-woofer, not just a woofer bypass. So it should make a difference.

We can get you through a recap of the crossovers.

As to the ferrofluid, I haven't done it but have opened a few tweeters to the point of being able to do it. So read up on that procedure, and if you determine your tweeter has the fluid, get the replacement ferrofluid from Parts Express (probably) and caps, too, I'd guess. Since you want to jump into this, we are going to need those pictures to recommend what to buy and let you get your parts into the transportation stream which is way crowded these few weeks.

I'd be curious the part number of the tweeter with ferrofluid. Mine are D2008 8517. I recall coming to the conclusion my version didn't have the fluid but I don't recall the decision making process. If it does, I would love to change it. Night and day different on a set of EPIs and KEFs I did.

I had not thought to ask this previously. Are the two crossovers accessed by removing the mid and the woofer? I can of course figure this out myself but I know many of you already know.

I suspect people here know about Paul but I just stumbled on several of his YouTube videos. He's a bit long-winded but for a novice like myself, very helpful. He has several just on capacitors.
