you have to start with the known problems and rule them out first, DQ-20's are known for bad surounds
 
Yes the surrounds do fail at about 30 years on a daily driver, if they aren't in direct sun. I know the DQ 20's were over $1200 a pair, and worth every penny +.
 
I am having trouble removing the woofers. I removed the 4 screws holding the woofer but I cannot pop it out easily. There is a black puddy/adhesive like substance which is holding them pretty good. Do I try to heat it up with a hair dryer and force them free?

Heating is good, pry gently.
 
I emailed the seller about these, but never heard back. I guess you beat me to them.

I just redid some DQ-10s for my brother. I'll take these off your hands if you think it's too much work.;)
 
Do Not bend the baskets, and STOP playing them for sure. Stabilize the cone with low stick masking tape in a cross pattern to the frame before you ship
 
image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg I got one woofer out. Can anyone tell me if this is an OEM woofer worth keeping or should it be replaced? In blue magic marker, written on the back of the magnet is 4/7/88 DQ20. The wires were soldered to the woofer terminals.
 
I just got the other woofer out. It has identical markings as the other woofer. How do I know if it only needs refoaming?

Also, I tested both speakers without the woofers. The tweeter and mid sound normal on one speaker but the other seems like the mid is not working at all and the tweeter has very low volume. I am trying to check the fuses but I don’t have the strength in my hands to turn the fuse holder. Is there a trick to getting the fuses out?

^^ There you go! I thought OCS went through some kind of a change.

If you do end up shipping, place the woofers face to face and secure with nuts and bolts or zip ties. Do NOT use twisty ties, they are too weak and can break under stress, and the woofers will then beat each other to death in the box. Pack the assembly securely in a box so it can't move.

As for whether to refoam, if one is bad, usually the other is due unless it was redone already. Gently poke and prod it, and if it begins to disintegrate, you haven't ruined it, it was already ruined.
 
Shouldn't have to ship. There are speaker repair places in the area and maybe some aker would step up and help the OP out with getting the woofers refoamed.

Next is to look at the mids and tweets and the crossover to see what is going on with those, one set working one set now. Since you get noise out of both tweets but talk about a quiet mid, maybe swap the drivers, mid for mid and see if the problem follows the mid or the cabinet. Repeat with the tweeters. Report back. Maybe the mids and tweets are sick, maybe the crossover needs work.

Look at the area inside the box where the wires connect on the back, is there a crossover there? Got pics?
 
You could take them to Speaker City in Glendale, and avoid shipping them. I've had speaker surrounds replaced by them, and was satisfied (until I found how easy it was to do it myself).

I did have a bass buzz with my DQ-20's even after replacing the surrounds, and finally found that the masonite ring had become partially unglued from the metal frame, so check for this as well. A bit of Ailene's Tacky Glue fixed that.
 
That midrange in the picture seems wrong to me. I don't remember any 'high force' marking on the pair I had, and certainly the factory would have put the trim ring in aligned properly.
 
Interesting - there are pictures of at least two different midranges in the images that come up when you google. Some do have the 'high velocity', and some have it on the side, not as you would expect, though on the other side from that pictured above.
