I'm interested in these speakers, but the seller claims that the speakers have had the tweeters
and midranges replaced recently. I spy a piezo tweeter in there. Did these speakers come with
piezos?

They came with piezos, crossed over pretty high which supposedly tamed them. As an owner of DQ10s I think that is up for debate.

If the two speakers that have been replaced in them are the same as what came out of them, it's on ok deal. If not, I would wait for another pair. With refoaming, which they might need, and tracking down the original drivers it's suddenly not a bargain anymore, not to mention they're missing the screens on the back.

and if it's the listing I saw, the stands are missing also. Where would you find them?

You could probably make a pair pretty easily. The pair I have have the stands in the link in the original post, and there's nothing exotic about them. Seem to be just MDF. Other pairs I've seen have simple feet attached to the bottoms.

The stands are a no brainer to build. At $200, refoam the woofers and enjoy them for another twenty years. These are nice speakers.

Originals come up often on eprey - there's 2 sets with the super tweeter and mids on sale now, and not very pricey either.

hello, im totally new at this - here goes...
i recently purchased dq10 set & also obtained original passive crossover matrix(as if i knew what that meant) all i need to complete the set is the sub woofer - im looking for guidance because i hear the original dahlquist subwoofer was junk (and to top that they are made out of unobatainium)- so what is an appriopraite subwoofer to complete this amazing set- any guidance would be appreciated .

Worry about properly driving the Dq-10s as a whole first. I belive that people think that they don't have good bass because they under power them. They have a relativley complex crossover that eats power. A decent amp that can handle 2 ohm loads and around 150w/ch is all that is needed.

FWIW - I own 2 pair and use a DQ sub in my rig.

BTW - Welcome to AK.

Yes the supertweet is crossed at 12kHz. However, that's only true when the caps are new...

When I got my first set, they squealed for a week--drove the quadrupeds nuts--then they settled down and work just fine. Seems they were in storage for 5 years before that...only time I've ever experienced a 'break-in' period. Glad I stuck with it.

My second set didn't squeal at all.

Lots of people modded these and the favorite target was nixing or replacing the Piezo with some higher quality UHF device... ribbons or E-stats. Not all mods retained the magical imaging. You've got to redesign the xover because there's no drop-in replacement that instantly improves HF and retains a balanced graph.

Ski is right a robust amp is a must amp. Surprisingly the foam makes a huge difference too in bass extension; use the exact spec orig replacements or lose an octave of bass.

Room placement, treatment, etc...

since last visit i have been diligently searching for a dq subwoofer to no avail - since i have the dq-mx1 passive crossover can i get some opine on what other passive sub may work ? -or should i ventutre into the uncharted territory of making my own sealed box (16x16x24 sealed appears to be the original dimensions or thereabouts) 13" sub ? would this work ? & also is the passive crossover dq-mx1)as good a choice as the active crossover(dq-lp1) ????

(by the way - ive got the high output amp situation solved )

The 13" driver was an odd choice. For that size cab you can much more easily find a 15" that will work.

Don't think you are limited to using one brand of xover. I've heard an active Ashly XR4001 that worked just great on a horn system with no caps or coils at all driven with flea amps.

But if your goal is a period-correct vintage set, I'd still look at replacing any old out-of-spec components in your xovers (in your external unit and passive on the speakers).

Man - i really appreciate your advice ! - by the way any ideas where i might be able to contact other dq cult family members who might have & be willing to part with the sub ?

There's a Dahquist users group on Yahoo, I think. I remember joining one, and I think that's where it was, when I bought my DQ-30s. It wasn't hugely active, but there were quite a few members and lots of info.
