Dahlquist M-909 Here at last

62sunbeam

Raconteur
So I picked up a pair of Walnut skinned Dahlquist M909‘s yesterday.

They have already bumped the Vandersteens out of the lineup and they are doing their best to bump the DQ 20s out of a lineup.

Pix and further analysis to follow

Thanks

Eric

I was going to post these up on Dollars and Sense.
Great price, looked good and I was tempted.
Enjoy!

But what do you think of their aesthetic? Pretty 80's looking.

Funny you should say that, out of thin air. They do look like 80s rack system speakers. Tall and narrow and not very deep. They weigh about as much as an entire rack system though including the speakers.

I’ve listened a little more and I do like them enough to want to refinish them and replace the tired grill cloth. I wish I still had some of the off white cloth I used on my DQM-9s, my DQ-20s and the DQ-10s I had a while back.

I’ll post pix and more listening analysis when they’re back in the system.

Thanks

Eric

Ok some proper MCM grill cloth and I can live with how they look.

I built pretty stoutly constructed risers for them too. They’re walnut veneer covered so they match. .

Every since I plugged them in I’ve been impressed. Amazing 3D sound stage and imaging. Bass for days and not in the least fatiguing.

Tomorrow I will hot glue on the badges.

I might even drag out the silver clad copper braid speaker cables my daughter made and see if I can coax out some more deliciousness.

Thanks

Eric

The one thing that using oil finishes that can be difficult is covering the repair areas.

The only thing that shows through the oil finish is my mediocre carpentry skills so I’m not too worried.

I actually finished the speakers in Laquer and they look new.

Now for some Bill Evans

Thanks

Eric

I've been binging on Jarrett, Evans, Red Garland, and Dave McKenna among others ever since I got my new DQ10s. I've never even seen a pair of M909s let alone hear them but everyone raves over them.

I've always been a fan of Dahlquist, although I've only owned the DQ-12. However, I currently have 2 pairs of Alon Petites, a pair of Alon Lotus Esprit Signature, and a pair of Nola KO2.

Can you post a pic of the drivers?

Did you freshen up the caps in the crossover?

I have two pairs of Dahlquist M909’s and couldn’t be happier. One pair I’ve had since 1988 and the second pair I picked up two years ago. My original pair I had repaired by regnar in Long Island NY. They did a great job. I powered the speakers with. Sansui AUD7 integrates amp. It’s rated at 85 watts per channel but I would like to buy a newer amp with more power. Anyone have any recommendations? I’m looking to spend about $1000 or so on the amp. I do like to listen to music pretty loud at times. Thanks

A new amp at that price you might look at either Yamaha or Onkyo's latest integrates. Nothing fancy but but have good reputations.

The only speaker that Jon Dahlquist designed was the DQ-10 which was helped into existence by Saul Marantz, other than that the DQM line and M903, M905, M907 and M909 designed by Carl Marschisotto. He left when the company when outsourced to China and went on to start Alon and Nola speakers

Wow, those are nice! I just acquired a pair of M905s and am quite happy as well. Are those original grill cloths though?
