Dahlquist m905 Vifa 6 ohm tweeter replacement

I have a pair of Dahlquist m905s and I’m going to replace the Vifa 6 ohm tweeters. These tweeters are no longer made and Regnar image.jpg image.jpg sells them for about $100 for one and they should be replaced as a pair. The Vifa are nice from Denmark but there has to be a more inexpensive comparable tweeter nowadays. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

The real question here is why these need replacement? The usual culprits are: A.) being fried by being overdriven at too high of volume levels for too long, B.) ferrofluid problems, or C.) cross-over capacitors that have gone bad and are allowing lower frequencies to reach the tweeter than it was designed to handle causing the voice coil to overheat resulting in burn-out..

Each model tweeter ever made sounds different from every other model ever made even from the same manufacturer and the efficiency levels are different as well, meaning tweeter swaps (versus same model replacements) are a potential can of worms if you really like the original sound of the speaker. On the flip side with a better sounding tweeter the sound quality could be improved but you would want to match the ohm rating and efficiency as close as possible for the cross-over to maintain its frequency roll-off characteristics the speaker was designed with and to maintain the volume level balance between the drivers.

Personally I've often found SEAS dome tweeters to be more pleasing to my ears (and brain) than comparable VIFA units.
 
Hello, I completely agree with you. That being said I thought about replacing the voice coil but was able to find the exact Vifas D26tg-05 out of a Snell and they are in pristine condition. Both used speakers were cheaper than one Vifa D26tg-05 6 ohm tweeter from Regnar and I nothing at all against Regnar.

What does that # signify? The existing tweeters have the # 111 and the new ones #310 otherwise identical.
 
Well I don’t know, I love speakers and lately I’ve been into Dahlquist speakers. Not the legendary DQ-10s but some DQM-9cs that I recapped and recovered. To me they are very upfront and a very versatile speakers that can handle a lot. Then I found a pair of Dahlquist m-905 on Ebay which I got for $85+shipping and shipping from South Carolina to Seattle is not cheap. I knew that one tweeter did not work but I hoped it would just be a fuse, it wasn’t. I found a pair of really nice D26tg-05 on eBay and bought them. Now I realize that it’s probably the voice coil on the tweeters which you can replace for $30. Apparently burning out the voice coil on a Vifa tweeter is a fairly common occurrence.

I wouldn't call it "common", but it can happen in an "oops" scenario. Someone changes a source or turns something on with the volume way too high, or the like.

Maddeningly enough- it seems like the diaphragm blows, to protect the fuse, in such cases. :D
