Dahlquist opinions?

hello, I am going to be picking up what appears to be a pair of Dahlquist DQ-10s with light gril cloths, as well as a matching subwoofer and crossover. I was wondering if anyone has any opinions on this set-up, as I have never heard a pair of DQ-10s before.

DQ-10's are pretty highly regarded around here. They'll probably need a recap, but they're fine speakers.

Just finished rebuilding a pair- damn nice speakers when re-capped, mirrored imaged and good foams on the woofers. With a subwoofer you'll not want for much else except good clean power, like in the 150~200 watt range.

Superb imaging, excellent detail are their hall marks. Truly a speaker ahead of its time. Some people do not like the Piezo tweeter and replace it with a good ribbon- I liked them just the way they they came. Recapping the network is a very good thing to do, kinda $$$ depending on the caps used. I used Solens with great results. Just be sure to spend the extra $$$ and replce the initial 80 mfd electrolytic with a good poly/ mylar type(s)

I picked them up four minutes before another guy came to look at them, and I walked away with them. Sounds like all drivers are functioning without problem, and I have the matching subwoofer and passive crossover. I will probably hook them up tonight.

Contact the power company, you will be using a lot more. Nice speakers though.

There is a guy on the asylum that said these speakers have been way outclassed in recent years, but he never said why. So other than the tweeter they are still nice speakers and with the sub and enough power you will be happy.

Do the woofers need a refoam?

Congratulations on the new DQ-10's! I think you are in for a real treat after you get them rigged up and making music. But as one of the other posters suggested, they are real power hogs, especially with the passive crossover and the sub, but they will repay your investment in power with some serious music.

They are a VERY 3-dimensional speaker capable of imagining wonderfully, when in a system that will support it, and paint a very wide and deep soundstage. They are not a real punchy or dynamic speaker, but are wonderful on vocals and acoustic folk music, jazz, blues, classical chamber music, etc. On their own they can be a little base-shy, hence the subwoofer, but are absolutely magical in the right setup. They're classics!

IMHO you should have at least 200w/ch. for just the DQ-10's w/o the sub and probably a little more w/ the sub. My DQ-10s are setup in a relatively small room, so I really don't miss the sub much. My DQ-10s sing beautifully on my Mc 2600, which is really overkill at 600w/ch., but they are absolutely magical when driven by my McIntosh C34V & 7270 combination.

Please excuse the stupid question, but how does the cloth over the front come off? It doesn't sound like the drivers need foam, but i would like to check just to make sure.
Oh and it looks like im going to need a bigger amplifier.

Next to the wood trim side pieces on each side there are a couple of large head phillips screws. Take out the two large screws per side- then look around where the back screen attatches to the top and side of the large fabric frame area and remove those smaller screws.
