DaLarry
The Elder Geek
Hi All:
My name is Laurence W. Stewart but my friends call me "Da Larry". Why? I travel to China frequently and in Mandarin "Da" means "large" or "big". At 6' 2" and 240, I am. I got the nick name over there and it sort of stuck.
Recently I've gotten back into vintage audio with a vengeance. I say back, because in the sixties I built a complete Dynaco rig consisting of a ST-70, PAS 3x, and FM 3. I also bought a pair of AR 2ax's. I lost that system in a burglary sometime in the seventies but never forgot the sound. Like most, I moved on to solid state but was never completely happy. I couldn't listen to it for hours on end like my old Dynaco set-up.
About 3 weeks ago I stumbled on a pair of AR 2ax's in great condition while donating at the Salvation Army. Naturally, I grabbed them right up. While buying the speakers I was talking to another shopper who told me he had an old Dynaco ST-70 and other gear in storage. He couldn't use it however, if I wanted the ST-70 I'd have to take the other stuff. The price he wanted was $500. After a quick check on ebay I found out that the price wasn't way out of line for the ST-70 by itself. The $500 package system turned out to include:
1. Dyncao ST-70 with GSI - Mods (my avatar and probably worth $800+)
2. Sony TA-E86B preamp (Amazing sounding!)
3. Pioneer TX 8500 II Tuner (Turns out to be a classic with a Walnut Case to boot!)
4. Mission 734 tower speakers (Sound nicer than the AR2ax's).
I can't begin to tell you how great the system sounds. I'm back to listen to music for hours.
That's my story and I'm sticking with it!
