Dammit! I need help re: preamp and/or amp damage...

This arrived in the mail this afternoon and proved to be of immediate use:
I checked the aforementioned line levels for each source and they are at the recommended 0 dB. Prior to the arrival of the remote, I unplugged both the amp and preamp and removed the "pop off" lid situated above the AC cord on the power amp so as to check the "slow blow" fuse. It is in "perfect" condition. Since I don't have the know-how to check the line rail fuses for the left and right channels in the amp and don't want to risk further damage and/or personal injury, I've elected to run both units to a larger, more reputable shop a few miles out during this upcoming Saturday.
Yesterday, while doing my own external troubleshooting, the sound returned to its normal "ear bleed" level for a few seconds while fading in and out at approximately one second intervals. It then returned to the abnormally low volume which prompted the creation of this thread. Hopefully, the next shop will actually go into the unit and potentially resolve this issue as I love my setup and would like to enjoy it in its originally fully functional state. Scouring the net via Google pointed to a blown capacitor, fuse, or transistor. After everything said and done, the volume is still -20 dB below where it "should" be.
Once again, I send thanks out to fellow AKers for the help and will post any relevant occurences and a resolution (assuming there is one.).
