Days of Yore

mrgates3

Road to Ruin
It was one of those nights where you spend half of it looking at the ceiling
and thinking about everything . I got to thinking about days of audio yore .
Anyway , some of you remember when cassette decks started to be made with LED's and other digital displays . Now I had to have one because being 19 in 1981 and into video games the digital display was COOL :thmbsp:
But now I find that I much prefer mechanical VU Meters on everything I have audio  To me they scream precision in a way that a vernier caliper
does . And now unless its Pioneer Fluroscan blue I dont give it a second thought . Anyone else know what I mean ?

I'm coming at this from a different generation but I know what you mean. I have an AKAI GXC-46D cassette deck with twin VU meters that was my first expensive audio purchase. In 1973 I paid $320.00 for it and still have it. I always thought the VU meters said precision.

Different views from different eras. In the 70's I though digital radout tuners and led power meters we awesome, now they strike me as cheap.

I come from an age when VU meter's were the cutting edge.
As time went on it came to mean Virtually Useless with the arrival of LED's.

Nice to see someone taking them seriously again.

Not all LED's are done well...

Some LED displays don't have enough segments\bars etc. to give you a good reading of signal levels.

Maybe they stand for (L)arge (E)rroneous (D)isplay! :scratch2:

Back in the days when we were actually recording to cassette tape, a good led display with peak holding was superior to vu meters. The concern was to set the peak recording level just below clipping/saturation, not how pretty the display looked.

The big advantage to the LED/Neon display was the speed at which it would respond as opposed to meters which were, on average, slow to respond.
