DBX 3BX DS/Sansui AU 999

I've had one of these DBX units sitting for years, and decided to hook it up today, and see how it sounds. I downloaded the manual and thought it looked pretty straightforward. well, it wasn't. I don't have a tape deck, but still figured I could make it work, just like an equalizer. I tried everything I knew how, even threw a tape deck in to see if it made a difference, and still could not get normal sound out when trying it with FM, record, or tape. I had it hooked up some years ago, on a receiver, but it's a no go now. Any ideas?

The jacks labeled "TAPE REC 1" on your Sansui are connected to the jacks shown as "1" on the DBX drawing.
The jacks labeled "TAPE PLAY 1" on your Sansui are connected to the jacks shown as "2" on the DBX drawing.

On the Sansui set the MODE SWITCH (TAPE MONITOR) to PLAY BACK DECK 1. Should be good to go:)
