DBX controller Box for SFX-1 Speakers?

I have a nice pr of DBX SFX-1 w/o the controller box. It looks like those are hard to find. Is the difference in sound worth the endless search to procure one?
They sound decent now. Have looked on ebay & craigslist to no avail. Thanks.

There's a thread on Audioreview (that interestingly links back to a thread here) that says that you need the controller to realize their full potential.

Set up an automated search on ebay and CL and be patient.
 
What actually does this control box do? Anything I can substitute for it that might simulate it? I am going to play around with an equalizer to see if that helps.

They come up occasionally and yes, the controller makes the speakers perform much differently (read better). You should also use an amp with a lot of headroom because they like power.
Good luck on your search and try to be patient. When properly set up and driven you would be hard pressed or find better speakers. The controller is what gives them depth and the (uncanny) presence.

I just picked up a Kenwood KR 8050(120 wpc) at an audio swap meet this weekend. I just cleaned all the pots and switches. Does this receiver have enough Headroom to make these speakers perform well? Also, until I can find a controller box I'm going to try to use a 15 band Kenwood equalizer to try to help the highs and lows.

Probably but I wouldn't try cranking them too high. The controller also acts as a protection device for the speakers. When the controller detects clipping it rolls the volume back some. How? No idea, I got brave and tried it once so I know what I think it does, not how :).
