DBX Soundfield 1A

Is the DBX Soundfield 1A worth getting and listening to without the external crossover/eq unit? There is a pair up local, but no external device. Sticker on the cabs says they need it. Is it like the Bose 901 which will work without it, but greatly improved sound with it?

They will play just fine without, but they won't have the acoustic quality they were intended to have. Whether or not they're worth getting without the controller is dependent on what the price is. If it's a bargain they'd be worth getting. Then, you need to set up a saved search on eBay and practice patience. You'll probably, eventually, find a controller.

Agreed. They sound ok without the SF1A controller. However as Fischerdude says, the speakers will not perform as designed. And yeah, it depends on the price and shape. Mine are almost pristine and I paid $175 for them IIRC
Seems like dbx went with the hypothesis that they could rely on good cabinet design, exceptionally well engineered crossovers and controller and cheap drivers to make a great sound. I think they succeeded. The controller really makes a HUGE difference.

The controller is also a good protection circuit for the speakers when it is installed. When the controller detects clipping it reduces the output to the speakers.

EDIT: yeah and good luck finding one. Patience is required. If you see one on ebay jump on it and jump big is what I would suggest

A friend of mine just finished re-building a pair with different and very-high quality components. He used Vifa tweeters and 2 pairs of woofers originally used in the Pioneer HPM 100. The mids are original. Spectacular performance. Interestingly, he achieved better sound using a passive 10-band equalizer than he did with the stock controller.

Thanks for the info, I might check them out today. They need help, don't know if they have all original drivers, but if they are available I might take a chance.
