DBX SX series - Video Sound Impact Restorer

Does anyone have any information on what it does? I've read claims that they are stand alone devices that offer the impact restoration feature that's found on high end DBX expanders and can be used in conjunction with lower end models of expanders to add the impact restoration feature. Can anyone confirm?

I own a dbx encoder and it is a magical device used by almost no one. It allows me to record dbx encoded material from records onto chrome tapes and then expands it to restore what was lost during the recording process. It is great but I can only play that recorded tape I just made on my system which has the dbx 128 encoder hooked into the tape monitoring circuit. If I play that tape on any opther system, it might as well be a regular tape. The one you are talking about appears to do the same thing but with home theater so maybe a 5.1 upscaling? I would not bother with it to be honest. I have played around with my DBX unit for quite some time and have found it to be all but useless considering the fact that there just isn't enough dbx encoded content, (tapes, lp's, etc), out there to really make it worth the purchase. I hope this helps. :)

Thanks for your reply but what you're talking about is tape noise reduction and is completely different to dynamic range expansion and impact restoration.
 
You are probably right. My dbx 128 says "dynamic range enhancer" right on the front of it but I think this is just a compressor used to smooth out the curve. My unit also has the NR feature built in but I rarely use it. Sorry to have wasted your time.
