DCM Time frame 350 speakers - revisited after 2 years

i bought these TF-350 speakers for an excellent price two years ago, thanks to all the threads on DCM here on AK. I had already read through all the threads I could find when I went out in response to an ad on kijiji.

The seller was about 45 minutes away through the worst traffic, but I was curious to hear what TF-350's were all about. This is after I had already been out to check out some TF-500s. I passed on the TF-500s because a few drivers weren't working and I was still relatively new to the hobby.

So I get to the guys place and he is moving and doesn't have any way to demo them. So after discussing for a while, I convinced him to let me have them cheap because I couldn't test them, and at a minimum I would have to refoam the surrounds.

I get them home, hook them up, and they sounded quite good. As I said, I had read all I could find about them. I had read that this model used a pair of Vifa tweeters. I had a pair of larger rated Vifa tweeters left over from a pair of Camber 2.5s with a blown woofer I had bought to use the inductors for another project.

So I decided to give them a try. The outer rim of the Camber tweeters were just a little too large and needed to have a rounded part carved out of the plastic rim before they would fit flush, but a few seconds on my angle grinder and they fit perfectly!

I plugged them in and was astounded with the results. The highs remained balance with the rest of the speaker, but they seemed to have more presence. I was thrilled with the results. After a while, I decided to pass them on, so I listed them, and got a response from a very interested buyer in Toronto. I was going there regularly, so I offered to bring them out for him, and he agreed. I told him they weren't using the original tweeters, which I would include, but that the ones I had on them sounded much better.

Two days before I was supposed to leave for Toronto, I was enjoying the TF-350s listening to Ray Charles, Genius loves Company, and the song changed to Fever! Now I was really enjoying these, so I was cranking it, and suddenly, the dynamics of Fever hit, and I'm suddenly hearing serious distortion. Oh damn!

It turns out the surrounds just could take the dynamics of Fever. So I had a new project. I cancelled the sale, and promised to get hold of the buyer when I got them done. Two years later, with a move coming up in summer, I finally got the surrounds done. Now they are back in service and sounding quite good, but with the original tweeters back in them. I ended up finding another pair of Camber drivers and needed the tweeters so I could restore the cambers back to original.

At the same time I got the woofers reformed, I also had a Sansui Model 2000 in beautiful cosmetic condition with a dead channel repaired. So I've got the two paired together, and I must say they sound really good together. They seem to have that synergy I think is so important.

I'll post some pictures once I take them tomorrow with natural lighting.

Some with the sock rolled down and some of the completed work. My version only requires rolling down the sock to get to the speaker drivers.

I didn't think they'd be that big when I saw the 6" woofers only.

Looks like the cloth comes off in an interesting way.

You did a great job on the surrounds Raccoon1400. Thanks!

It will pain me to let them go, but I have a lot of nice speakers I have to let go. Moving in with my girlfriend means I have to reduce. I just listed everything I have on kijiji, and I was stunned at how much I have! I just counted 40 items including 16 pairs of speakers! And that doesn't include the two 7.1 home theatre systems!
