Swimming in Sound
I have seen a pair of time frames (not sure of the model) at my loal thrift for $250. Seems like a lot for thrift items but i would consider them. The exterior is very clean and new looking, but i didnt attempt a sock removal. Is this a deal or no deal?

Cheers!

Unless they are TF1000s, I`d say that`s too high considering where they`re for sale. If they are mint TF600 or 700s and you were getting them from the original owner, or knew some of the history of the pair, it would be an okay deal, but nothing more. I`ve owned TF600s, Macrophones (very rare), and am currently refurbishing some Time Windows 1s. Btw, the TWs are usually preferred to the TF series.

Take a look at the name plate and get the model number.

A rule of thumb is the number is roughly the original list price. (Don't take this too literally.)

Divide that by four and get the expected auction price. Whether you should pay that depends on condition and how much you want them.

Yeah, probably too much (could they be at a Salvation Army?) but I will say that the DCM Time Frames can be spectacularly good sounding speakers.

I really enjoy the sound of my Magnepan SMGa speakers. From what i gather, the Time Frames have rear firing tweeters? Could this be the speaker that gives me maggie magic but isnt gutless?

thanks for the help!!

Only some have the rear mounted tweeter(s), not all. I'm not sure which model(s). I'm sure someone else will chime in....

The TF600 has 2 rear firing tweeters, 1 front firing tweeter, and 2 6.5" drivers, and is ported...

....all the other TFs above the 600 have rear tweets as well IIRC.

The TF400 II's also have a rear firing tweeter, but not the series I. Very nice sounding speakers, as I have 400 I's. But, you would have to look for a model number. I really like my 400's but I also paid like 30 bucks, so, if I had not, no biggie. They sound like 250.00 vintage speakers, but recouping that money will be hard.

LOL.

I have DCM TF600s and SMGa and Bose 901s. All of them direct/reflecting.

If you set them up to their best advantage, they all sound good. I find the bass with the Mags to be more accurate and more pleasant on classical music, but it seems highly dependent on the room and placement. Both the DCMs and the Mags have good imaging, in my experience.

No they don't. Only the TF-600's have the rear firing tweeters. And IMO after having owned the Time Windows, the TF-700's and multiple pairs of the TF-600's... I think the TF-600's sound the best of all of them.

DOH! It was indeed TW7s, not TF700s, which also had rear firing tweets. Musta had my wires on reverse polarity. I still think TWs are overall better than TFs after owning both.

After close inspection i picked them up for $150. They sounded great on the wrong amp in my livingroom (not their natural habitat) for the 30 min i could listen on my break today. Ill post my thoughts on them in the proper forum later.

Cheers!
