Blue Shadow
Waiting for Vintage Gear from this century
I've owned the TWs since new and just got the L990s yesterday for 20% over the asking price. I paid $15 for each one and they are in almost great shape.
I know I owe an opinion on the ads 810-M (no L), the -M for Monitor as I painted them Satin Black vs the DCMs, but the ads have a noisy woofer. 206-0317 if anyone has a extra. So that review has to wait, but I can give initial impressions of the L990 vs the DCM.
Listening to these two and having to switch speaker wire makes it difficult. I'm using an ARC SP9III and McCormack DNA-1 and there is no speaker switching and I haven't built the wiring for my speaker switching box (switchgear 8-way box). I'll have to enlist my recent CL find, a Pioneer SA-9500 from the BR system in the next few days if I don't build the wiring.
Anyway, initially I hear a deeper low end on the ads and more midrange presence. The DCMs although not going as deep do appear to have the low end connected to the rest of the range better. It sounds like the L990 is missing the mid-bass. The speaker sounds like a woofer for lows plus highs, in this case a midrange (206-0217 for those keeping track) and tweeter (206-0117). Due to the presence of the ads, it sounds a bit clearer but the TW sounds smoother. Not having listened to my tube amps in a while I hate to say the TW sounds like tubes compared to the ads but that may be the case. A neighbor said the TWs seemed to have higher highs. He is not a regular listener but it is another comment.
That is the quick evaluation. Now the bottom line. I'm keeping both sets and gonna enjoy them. Maybe in 6-months I'll have a good idea of my likes and dislikes, but right now no matter what I said, I like both a lot.
And the thing I like the best (other than the price) is that new toys makes me use the system more. I hate to have all that equipment just sit idle. Now I have new stuff to listen to.
