After successfully reanimating my old Technics tape deck I figured I'd try and do the same thing for my dad's RS-X902. The original problem was that the device would randomly stop playback or turn the tape, apparently thinking it had reached the end. So I went and replaced all the belts and pinch rollers plus a small gear. So far so good.
However, at some point during that operation I must have inadvertently touched something somewhere. I was a a little occupied with replacing the gear (and taking apart the deck mechanism to do so) and must have forgotten to disconnect power before messing with things, so I'm assuming a shorted something. I know, that was dumb.
Now the deck is dead. As in, I hit the power button, then nothing happens.
I still get voltage from the PSU (somewhat higher than the manual says but the values look reasonable, so I assume that's OK) but after that I'm somewhat out of ideas. I *could* desolder every single component and test them individually (probably starting with caps, then transistors) but before spending all that time (there's lots of stuff on that PCB), is there a more reasonable approach for someone with a very limited understanding of what's actually going on in such a circuit?
