GasBurning Stereo Machine
I've reached a point of too many speakers. Now its decision time. I'd like to keep 2 pairs. These are the models I have.
Altec model 6
Altec santana II's
Altec model 5
JBL L100
Dynaco a-25
Dynaco a-50
I'm currently running them off a 35 watt luxman L2. My Luxman 5L15 is still being fixed... (which should be in the 80 watt a side range)
Now for my reviews....
Altec Model 5's - Weak midrange. Tight bass as to be expected. Efficient as hell.
Altec Model 6's - I will probably never get rid of these. These speakers were my gateway into vintage audio. Always happy listening to them. But they're no JBL l100's or Dynacos. Decently efficient.
Altec Santana II's - The model 5's big brother. Very similar sounding, the the larger driver does a better job in the lower end of things. Same tweeters.
JBL l100 - My favourite speaker ... I think. Very very very clean sounding at low volume levels, but the coloration is very noticable in the midrange section at higer volume levels. Imaging is poor. Very very adaptable speakers, sound good with most of anything. Extremely efficient. My 35 watt luxman will make them scream.
Dynacos. - I think this is what I'm going to go with. Both the a-25, and a-50's are in near perfect cosmetic shape. They have some incredible imaging an acurate lower end, that makes the l100's sound muddy. Don't like some of my heavier stuff though. Metal doesn't sound quite right. The l100's got em beat in that catagory. Very nice for.... anything not metal. Jazz, Piano, and classic rock sounds unreal on them. Take a handful power compared to the altecs or JBL's the 35 watt luxman can't quite do the job for all 4.
Now, for your guys to bits. My reviews were far from technical, just more or less mine ear's evaluation. If i can figure it out maybe I will start a pole.
What do you think I should keep?
Please feel free to add your own reviews, or tell me of your expiriences.
