Demagnetizing tape in metal reels

Can reel-to-reel tapes be properly demagnetized with a bulk tape eraser when the tape is mounted on a metal reel? Does the metal of the reel interfere with the process to some extent?

Easy enough to do a 7 inch reel tape by having it/putting it on a plastic reel but what about the big 10.5 inchers which are on metal reels?

Bulk erasing does work on tapes mounted inside of metal reels, but it does seem to take a little longer to get them to erase as completely.

Why not spool it on a plastic reel for the erasing? Probably be good to exercise the tape anyway.

Would be and issue if...the reels were made out of a ferrous metal..Reels are aluminum which is non-ferrous.

The magnetic field will induce electric current in the aluminium (even though a non-ferromagnetic metal) - edddy currents - which will somewhat distort and reduce the intensity of the field.
But the eraser manufacturers ough to have taken that into account when designing it. The Teac bulk eraser brochure I have shows the thing in use with a 10-1/2 metal reel mounted on it.

Lots of 26.5 cm Ø plastic reels around and they are not flimsy

Revox, Philips, Ampex, Maxell.

Look on the bay under empty take up reel and guaranteed you will find some.

I've never seen a Maxell 10.5" plastic reel. Anyone here have a picture of one? As for general 10.5 plastics, polycorp used to make some nice ones. Don't know if they still do though. But getting back to demagnetizing in a metal reel, how much longer can that be expected to take over plastic?

I have two of the 10" Maxells, will post a picture when I dig them up out of my archives.

The most common plastic 10.5" reel I've seen are these ones from Scotch. For a while these were all I could find around here. Some of the ReVox A77 decks came with plastic 10" reels that didn't need NAB hub adaptors, they actually fit the regular spindle locks that 7" reels used.
