Demand for Reproduction Lamp housings?

Hey guys, I am new to this forum but not new to vintage Marantz equipment. After taking apart my mint condition 2238B I was very frustrated to learn that almost every tab was broken on both the main lamp housing and the meter housings. Because of this I have decided to design and make reproductions for the later silverfaced "B" models. I plan on doing both the main housing and meter housing because the whole silverfaced line has the same housings with a possible exclusion of the 2216B. If there is enough demand I would make enough to sell. In addition I found another member here is making and selling reproductions for the bigger models with good success. I also have a 2220B that I could pull apart and reproduce. After doing some preliminary research I believe the 2220B housing would also fit 2215,2220,2225,2235,2240,2220B,2235B,2240B, if I did make these do you guys think there would be demand for them? I would probably do the meter lamp housings as well. Also if there is other information I might need to know please don't hesitate to reach out. Okay, so it has been brought to my attention that the other seller's housings fits a good amount of the small receivers, and I don't want to step on anyones toes because I'm sure he spent a lot of time and money developing it. But would there be any interest in meter housings?
 
I would think there would be interest in the meter housing as well because many have tabs holding the lamp boards in that break as soon as try to remove boards. And they are typically warped and very next to impossible to put back into place properly once removed to change meter vellum paper. At least my experience.
 
I think you'd find a lot of people interested in housings for the all-silver faced 2226B, 38B, 52B, 65B and 85B. Very popular receivers.

I wish someone would make another run of dark faceplates for them too...but I suppose that's for another thread :)
 
Hey thanks for the replies. So right now my lamp housing and meter housing out of my 2238b are with the CAD guy. I will get back to you guys with updates as I know more.
 
The way I look at it...the more parts the better for these older receivers. I wouldn't feel as if you are stepping on anyone's toes. Usually from what I've seen is that x number of repo parts gets made at some point and when those are gone, they are gone. So guys just now getting into it don't have these available to them anymore.

The plastics are a problem area though as it's frustrating to snap the tabs off or get a receiver that's had an LED upgrade and find all of them are missing.
 
Okay well I appreciate your response. And yes I agree that the more parts available the better. And yes that's what happened to me. I had my receiver professionally gone through at the expense of my plastics.
 
Lol ya catrafter i was not super happy the next time i opened it up. and to answer your question Magnus back im not really sure. I will have the expense of getting it into CAD because unfortunately im not capable of doing that and then i will have the printing costs. I'm going to try and price them as low as possible. My goal isn't to make loads of money off these. Im just looking to provide parts for these old receivers and not take a loss doing so. but once i have the file from the CAD person im going to start getting some quotes to have it printed and i will reach back out with some ball park figures.

I need a couple of housings for my 22xxB projects with crumbling plastic. I guess the Marantz engineers never expected we'd be using these 50 yrs later when they spec'd out that material, or maybe plastic was new back then and they didn't know. Working on some Pioneers . . . they have beautiful steel housings that stand the test of time! Thanks for taking the initiative to suggest this.
 
There's Sansui models that could use replacement housings e.g. QRX-7001. Don't know if they're shared with enough models to make it worth it.
 
Very interested to see what you come up with! Especially those meter housings. I've puzzled over how to print them effectively as one-piece and without supports to no avail thus far.

If you're going to market them, I'd suggest both are important because a) using supports results in parts that look like hot garbage (sorry, just my opinion!), and b) assembling and aesthetically finishing multi-part designs is a real PITA at quantity. My 2385/2500/2600 housing prints in two pieces that have to be bonded and painstakingly sanded and I took the listing down for the rest of the year. Needed a break :) Not worth $80 minus machine time, materials, S&H, eBay / PayPal fees, etc... to me right now to have to make one more of those dang things!

I have fun making them and supporting the community, but when pricing them, take your time and eventual fatigue into consideration. I'm definitely not getting rich $25-30 a pop (yep, that's about all that's left after the above outlined expenses) and every time I hear that eBay "cha-ching" noise, it's 50% jubilation and 50% groan.

Robert, I too have a 2238B that I'm rebuilding that has bad main lamp housing and meter housings. Did you ever get to making these for others? I could sure use the two housings for my system. Thanks!
 
Why not just upload the design to thingiverse and let folks with a 3D printer download and print as needed? I'd love to see more of an "open source" community when it comes to vintage receivers but people just don't seem to want to do that.

I haven't even seen the measurements posted on the various Marantz walnut cabinets so a DIY'er could reproduce them in their workshop.

It all seems a bit ridiculous to me.

The most common wc22 measurments are here on AK, even with metric units. You have to search a little bit more.

Should be a sticky. That needs posted as does the simpler 3-panel one (the nomenclature escapes me at the moment) and the ones for the smaller chassis receivers/amps (ex: 2216B) and the larger chassis versions (like the 2330B).
 
I am sure that AKers who have those housings will share a measures with you if you will make a technical drawing.
