Denon AVR-4800 setup without remote

Hi Everyone.

I recently found a Denon AVR-4800 at the SA for a reasonable price. I plugged it in, and it turned on, so I decided to buy it. Having brought the heavy (47lbs I think!) unit home, I hooked it up to my system and tried to give it a listen.

I played around with the speaker settings, and tried a few different components with it on different inputs, but I couldn’t seem to get it going. I looked online a bit, and it seems as though this receiver is fairly, if not entirely, dependent on a remote. In the online manual, it recommends setting it up while it’s plugged in to a TV and using the remote. I can’t seem to get my TV to work with it, and I don’t have a remote for it yet. Is there anyone here who has experience with setting up the AVR-4800 and can maybe shed some light on how to go about that and whether I need the remote and to have it hooked up to a screen?

Maybe try a universal remote? Denon was pretty consistent across units. An old cable box universal remote might do the trick.
 
The RC-921 or RC-932 remote work well with the 4800/4802 units. The RC-932 was spec'd for the 4802R model which dropped the fussy (and pricey) RC-8000 touchscreen IR/RC remote. Programmable universals are OK, but there's really no substitute for the real McCoy. Good luck.

BTW, if you decide to go inside to clean out the mouse piss or set bias/offset values or do tuning or anything else, be VERY careful poking around. Those filter caps hold a helluva charge and it can vaporize a probe tip (or maybe you) in a heartbeat—don't ask!
