All I've ever owned for home theater receivers are Denon models, going back to ~1997. Here are the models and how much each weighed.

Denon AVR-3600 = 47 lb.
Denon AVR-5800 = 62 lb.
Denon AVR-4308 = 42 lb.
Denon AVR-4520 = 36 lb.
Denon AVR-X1700 = 19 lb.

The newest one has no component video or composite video inputs and is lower power output than the others. That is a huge decrease in weight over the years though.

Did they also transition from class AB to class D? That would reduce the need for heat sinks. And they've also probably gone from a linear power supply to a switch mode.
 
No. The newest model listed last is still an AB class amplifier. The 5800 was 170 wpc and had 7 amp channels. The X1700 is 80 wpc and 7 amp channels.
