Denon DL-110 Price doubling May 1st 2015

needlestein - thanks for the info. I read your thread. Amazing and far out. I have some questions (as you might expect) but I'll take them there. Are you, by any chance, Richard Steinfeld the 'Stanton' book author?

Oh Mister Pig... Please... What's some bitching among friends... People are people - you give 'em a great deal once, they'll want it again. Isn't that understandable?

Comet Supply offered the DL-110 to U.S residents only. One could not access their DL-110 page without being registered, nor find it on their search page, if the IP address did not originate in north America. Not especially meaningful, yet, not exactly what you'd expect from lawless retailers who aim at selling knocked off junk. Is it?

It doesn't really matter. If Tom, Dick and Harry could get a legit cart for $87 then that's what's it's street value is despite what the mfgr thinks about it.

The DL-110 is worth way more than it was sold for but at some point the MSRP went bananas and it stopped being 'best bang for the buck'. At the same price range there are now alternatives, some from Denon it self, that are equal to, or better than the DL-110. AFAIK none of those are HOMC and that's my real problem. I was half joking about the rest.

Cheers

Tom
Well if you can solder, or take a stab at learning how.....you can make yourself a pretty decent step up device from some old Shure microphone transformers, and the cost is not horribly expensive. Then buy the DL 301 MK II, thats the best buy in the Denon line now.

this kind of soldering isn't too hard...good project to learn on.

EDIT: from my perspective the best cheap LOMC cartridges out there are either going to be the Denon DL 301 MK II....or perhaps even better is the AT OC 9 II from LP Gear. You get it in the low $300. Line contact stylus and boron cantilever. Cartridge has stood the test of time, and a great value at that price.

That is an opera singing pig!!! Very very very cool video of an aspiring opera pig taking voice training lessons. You were very lucky to find that. I see it was mislabeled as a pig singing death metal. An understandable mistake for sure.

Here is a tribute and statue to one of the great opera pigs to grace the stage. Give it a few seconds for the proof of pig.

Here is a video of other aspiring classical music pigs.

Congratulations on finding the one you did. Obviously AK is in your debt.

The '160 was supposed to be more "refined", tho some preferred the '110 or felt the SQ difference not worth the cost difference.

I received the same email as the OP. To answer some questions I've seen, yes you can order from Canada. I bought my Jelco tonearm from USA HiFi, go figure, and my Denon DL-110. You don't necessarily need to go to Amazon Canada to place your order.

Go to AV Gear Shop. They also have a store on the Bay.

Most people will not buy the DL-110 if the prices double. Is it a great cartridge? Yes. Is it worth the money at twice the price? NO! I purchased three from Comet for $87. each. I still have two unused and one with low hours on it. I now use the Plain-Jane DL-103 and am blown away by it's performance. The DL-103 IS a best buy imho. You can find it for under $160. Just google it.

have you compared the 103 to the 103r? i'm wondering why the "r" is so much more expensive?

No, I haven't listened to the DL-103R. I've wondered about that too. I might eventually go in that direction OR maybe have it re-tipped for $150. I haven't decided.

It sounds as though Denon is finally getting pricing of a new cartridge into line with 'retipping" services. They must have gotten behind the curve over the years and didn't feel that they could make a move during a downturn, so now its catch up time.

Is there duty charged if I'm an American purchasing online from a Canadian supplier? I Googled around minimally and found the following statement: "Duty is not charged if the value of the imported goods is up to US$200." Can anyone verify this? I was actually looking to buy 3 Denon DL-110; 1 for myself and 1 each for 2 friends. The total on 3 would obviously be higher than US$200. Thought I'd ask if anyone is an "expert" on such things as duty when ordering (as an American) from a foreign country.

I bought one (1) a few days ago. Cost is $159 CDN + $17.98 CDN = $176.98 CDN. There was no tax added. Charging it on a credit card in US dollars converted to $151.07 on THAT day. The credit card company works the exchange rate. My Amazon Prime status did help me with shipping charges. That's a few less Molsen Canadians beers for me on my next visit.

Thanks for sharing your buying experience. However, I don't think the Canadian seller would be collecting the duty though, since the duty, if there is one, would be imposed by the USA, not Canada.

When I lived in the Republic of South Korea, I had American friends there who would sometimes have family members in the USA send them gifts in the mail. If the Korean government agents inspected the package and found its contents to exceed a certain value, the addressee would receive a notice that they had to pay Korean duty (at the local post office where the package was held) in order to receive the package. ***This was in the ROK; I am not suggesting that the USA or other countries have the same system/format.***

Just thought maybe there is an American AKer who regularly purchases items online from foreign countries who could enlighten me. Thanks!

vincei, thanks for the heads-up on the impending price increase!
Just now purchased a spare for when my present DL-110 bites the dust.
I bought it from the seller on Amazon Canada.
