I scored one of these pro-sumer decks at a local "reuse center" (it's like a thrift shop, except that they give you a week to return things if they don't work as advertised). It looked to be in excellent condition and it was labeled "working". Indeed, I put a prerecorded audio cassette into it, and it appeared to run fine (I didn't have a 1/4-inch adapter for my portable headphones and there were no amps and speakers to connect the unit to).
Anyway, two days after I got it home, I was demagnetizing and cleaning the heads in preparation for what should have been an afternoon of tape-to-digital transfers. I noticed that the little tape guide that normally resides to the left of the erase head was missing. I also found a stray piece of metal at the bottom of the transport bay (the missing tape guide?). I tried fishing it out with a pair of tweezers, but it escaped into the main cabinet of the unit. or got lost on the floor, I'm not sure which.
I do have an old Pioneer CT-5 cassette deck sitting in my storage shed, but I'm not sure if its erase head will fit properly into the Denon (I'm not planning to make recordings, just use the deck for playback).
Is it possible to get spare parts and service data for this unit? If so, where? If I have to buy another whole unit just to fix this one, I'd just as soon return the deck to the reuse center and chalk the whole experience up to lousy luck.
