Denon DP-2000 Speed Wandering

I bought a DP-2000 from a guy who said that speed stability was rock solid. Surprise. It ain't. The strobe display moves counter-clockwise in small "chunks" instead of remaining perfectly still. It does this at 33 and 45 (except faster "chunks"). By "chunks" I mean that the strobe pattern moves about a half inch pauses briefly, then moves again, and again, and again....

Now, I know that these regulate speed via a magnetic coating on the inside of the platter rim which is read by a tape head-like reader. I've seen Denons where this rim has been scratched and/or damaged and the speed control is history. However, on this one, the rim looks perfect and the head looks fine I cleaned it with alcohol).

Further, since this speed variation exhibits itself in "chunks" instead of a smooth strobe movement in one direction or another, as I am used to when using a strobe pattern on other tables) I wonder if it is an issue with "cogging" of the motor or some other electrical "pulsing" anomaly.

Given nearly zero experience with these Denons, I am stumped. Anyone else have a solution or ideas?

I have a DP-2000 that behaves in the same manner as you described, back there in 2006, with the strobe display losing lock in "chunks".

Did you learn anything about this condition? Is it fixable?

Hi and Greetings from Finland!

There are two trim pots under motor cover. VR1 and VR2 if I recall right. First you should try to apply some contact cleaner and then try to adjust 45 to correct speed. Just turn VR2 and turn table over and with platter on start it. Now check strobe if it is better or worse :thmbsp:

After 45 rpm speed is ok, then start to adjust 33 1/3 speed.

I was able to set my DP2000 to correct speed. Good luck!

Sorry for the thread necromancy but hiisku is correct! I was having the same issue and just a turn back and forth of v2 took care of the issue. It was just some corrosion in the pot and just loosening it up did the trick. V1 which controls 33 was fine so I didn't futz with it. In the pic you can see me pointing to the two pots. V2 is the one on the Left, just confirm its marking on the circuit board. I noted it's original position around 11 o'clock, turned it all the way clockwise, all the way counter clockwise and put it back in its original position.

Boy this is a Old Post but it just saved my Butt....I have had one of these for 20 plus years had the turntable into a shop maybe 15yrs ago told me they can't fix it and charged me $150 for time spent
I just fixed it took prob 15 min total ...I did have to move both Pots one seems to affect the other 33 45 speed ..only took a few minutes playing with pots and now it tracks beautifully...Thank you so
much now I can enjoy...I have a full system from the late 70's Hafler 220 amp with the rare switcher tone control separate unit, also one of the first Luxman CD players, NAD tuner ..and very rare
IMF 1V reference standard speakers, they stand almost 4' tall ..I was cleaning all this up to sell now I might think twice about it

Well, this is post is getting seriously old (20 years since the first and six years after the last one) but the information is still relevant. After replacing all the caps and transistors in my DP-2000, I was banging my head against a wall trying to get it to solve this exact problem. Then I found this post today - and it worked! Thanks to everyone for contributing.
