Denon DP-47f = Moral Dilema

BlackSwamp

I just got a make your own offer on one of these TT's. The woman is selling items that belonged to her husband who passed away 2 years ago. She doesn't want to go through the hassle of selling it herself. While we don't know each other well, she seems to trusts me.

It looks absolutely mint and seems built like a tank. He took great care of his stuff.

My question is where do I draw the line between a good deal and ripping her off? I try to live straight up, the TT would be a noticeable step up from my current model but not my dream unit.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Follow my two-step program below.

1. Make a fair offer a guest between E-Bay and a great deal price. (I know this is not a scientific method but buying vintage audio never is).

2. Send the TT to me.

By following the above you can prove the price payed was never for personal gain. ;) As always l'm here to help my AudioKarma brothers. :D :D

A local shop here has one still gathering dust on its shelf. It was priced at 600.00 and is now marked down to 499.00. A quick check of Epay shows one sold 250.00. My guess is a good deal would be in the 200-300 range for one that is in superb condition. Also What type of catrtidge is mounted on it since it will have some type of value as well depending on its make and model. Now if you want it for resale thats a whole different ballpark.

My Question would be is would this table make you happy enough to keep it ? If not I wouldnt bother since the selling market is in the dumpster right now. It is an excellent quality table that truely is built like a Tank, but if its not the one you want I would'nt bother. Hope this helps

I have always liked the solid looks and feel of this turntable- can't comment on the sound, as I have never closely listened.

I believe the list price on this unit is around $650, but it is commonly available brand new for $500.

Denon TTs do NOT have the cachet of, say, comparably priced Regas et al.

Half new price is more than the seller should expect, plenty of used TTs on the market, believe $150 is more than fair to the seller.

Of course, someone with the audio bluebook will soon give the book value (good for merchants, doesn't really apply to an individual item IMHO).

Even if you don't buy the unit, you can use others' input to help her set a fair price.

Thanks for the feedback.

It pays to live straight up. I'm purchasing the TT for $190.00. From your replies and my research I'm comfortable with that price for us both. I'm not sure of the cart, the make & model were buried under the headshell and she had no idea. Judging by the decent quality (but not dynamite) of what he had it's probably somewhere in the Grado silver/gold category.

The TT should be a nice "get me by/second unit" Even if I get something better dow the road, it should work well for my "den/computer room."

She is also going to donate some of the other items to the non-profit charitable organization I run. She gets the tax-write-off, and the profits from those units (who knows) goes to a great cause.
