Denon Dp-47F "Start" issue - Tonearm does not move

I recent bought an Denon dp-47f from Japan. But I have some issue with it

#1. When I press "Start" the platter spin, but the tonearm does not move, and press "STOP" does not stop the platter, I read many posts here and tried to rotate the small screw near the tonearm, but it does not work. The "REPEAT" works fine, when I push the tone arm to the rear of record, it can locate the record and start to play. Can anyone help me about this? Does the issue relate to CDS or cap? Thank you very much

Electronic servo tonearm. Likely non-functional. Big issues: Getting elderly, and few technicians know how to properly repair one in the USA. Also compounded by buying Japanese domestic market which runs on 100v. Try a step down from 120v to 100v. Welcome to AudioKarma. Post wisely, well, and often.

As the previous poster mentioned very few techs if any are left can work on those here in the states. Many people have tried to repair those with help here but I don't know of any that have succeeded. There are service manuals available, but they are vague at best. Denon made really nice turntables back then, but they are all servo controlled with lots of electronics.

I bought a completely refurbished one off the Bay from a guy called capt. Mark. He does a lot of Denon tables. Don't know if he accepts ones from the general public though.
Might be worthwhile to ask though. Maybe he can walk you through the issue if he's not willing to take it on himself?

Thank you very much to gizzyman and jim. I read some post from captmark. He said that it seems 80% CDS/C38 cap problem. I have recapped the C38, but it does not work. I tried to cover the CDs1-3 and see how tonearm react, it seems one of these has problem, because the tonearm stops at the right place of the record 45rpm and repeat works correctly (CDS 3 and CDS2). I think CDS1 has problem, so I will change it and see what happens next. Thank you both of you again.

Hope you figure it out!

Probably not your issue, but you'll get problems with the auto movement of the tonearm if you are not using the original platter mat, or if you have positioned it incorrectly. There are two positions for the mat, one is a quarter turn offset. Only one of those gives you the full range of auto operations. Other than that, there are quite a lot of things that can go wrong with this turntable, some of which would be technically challenging, and they're said to be living on borrowed time. But you may be lucky if you persevere with it. I have had several of of these, a 47F and two of the other Denon auto models picked up for practically nothing, and after a bit of reluctance to operate they eventually came good. They all still work - the 47F went to another family member and has had daily use for about the last 8 years. Getting the needle drop positions was actually the most fiddly part of setting it up.

Yeah, I got the JVC version from Japan too and same situation.

Advertised as 'flawless. Checked by technician' by Unisound.

I bought it from so called reputable dealer "flawless" because they're manual tables once the electrics stuff up.

Hi everyone.
I just bought an new CDS photoresistor and replaced the CDS1 (you can search GL5537, captmark suggested GL5516, but mine one is also working) on the board under the tonearm. After that, I readjust the tonearm to correct the lead in position. It is easy, just follow the intructions in the service manual. Now my TT is working without any issue. Thank you all for your comment.

Thanks for the update. You are the first I know from here to fix one of these tables. Congrats!
You mention about captmark posting. Where does he post at? Thanks
My DP-52F after say 3 or 4 records, at the end of play the tonearm lifts and the brake will come off for a second or so and then back on, the arm returns to its rest and as it drops the motor will briefly start then stop. Annoying but doesn't affect the use of the table. Thanks

Hi Jim, when I searched for the solution to repair my turntable, I found his comment on this post from vinyl engine and somewhere else, I cant find it in my bookmark, but I referenced to these topics where his comment was detail information and helpful.

Thanks for the response. I think I found the answer to my problem from captmark and it doesn't sound like fun at all.
If it does in fact change as it warms up it is a recap needing to happen NOW- Call it fair warning before something totally fails and takes an obsolete IC with it.
