You would think that after using this turntable for nearly 30 years, I would know the answer to this, but I'm not sure. The owner's manual says, to adjust vertical tracking force [stylus force], you should dead-level the arm with the power off, and then set the tracking force dial to what is recommended for your cartridge. Done. This implies the TT is applying the correct force via its servo mechanism.
However, this never worked for me, so I would dial in enough force to prevent skipping. I finally got a Shure stylus force gauge, and have used that to good effect. But, I wonder: by having 1 gram of force at the gauge [minimum recommended for my Shure cartridge], and setting the dial to 1 gram, am I actually running 2 grams of force [more than the 1.75 gram maximum recommended]? It seems highly unlikely to me that the 30-year-old electronics can actually automatically set an accurate 1 gram of force, but I dunno. What do you say?
