Denon DP 60L Problem

I have a very nice DP 60 L which I thoroughly enjoy.

I have an issue which seems to be getting worse.

The problem seems to be two fold:

1. When the tone arm descends to the LP as the stylus touches the LP it veers off away from the record.

This happens intermittently.

2. Once I get the stylus on the LP.....often times it will miss track as it gets close to the end of the side.

When I take it in for service......my reputable TT guy says I have it out of adjustment. But it eventually does it again.

I have tried both arms and multiple carts.....

It seems to me as if the tone arm is not floating as free as it should and therefore not allowing me get the adjustment correct.....

The table is pristine and I don't want to give up

Anyone ??

I have read others mention to check to make sure the tone arm wires are not binding on the inside. You may want to open her up and see what's going on inside.

I have one from another manufacturer, that was doing similarly. It was manufactured in '77' and saw little use. I eventually loosened the arm bearings and then retightened them and it works perfect now. Maybe that would help yours.

This, plus dialing back the anti-skate (which you've surely done), and double checking how level your deck is with a good bubble level comes to mind. The DP-60L didn't have the Dynamic Servo Tracer tonearm so that simplifies things.

I have two theories which I am in the process of investigating their potential validity:

1. The arm has some how lost its calibration:

When I advance the counterweight the problem goes away. The issue with this solution is that I don't know what the true tracking weight is. If I set the arm weight to the cart specs and the problem manifests I can advance the counter weight several grams until the problem goes away. But again....who knows where I am really at.

2. Something is hanging up on the arm assembly:

As the arm descends it looks smooth and then right before it hits the record it seems like something hangs up and it slides off to the right.

I think it might make sense to have the arm assembly taken apart and lubed.

The counterweight might be slipping. Do you have a digital scale that you can use to test VTF?

No. But I can get one.

I was considering this.

What would I do.......just place the stylus on the pad of the scale?

This would then measure the stylus pressure?

Correct?

That's correct. And you'll want a scale on which the measuring pad is as thin as possible. Like this:

Hey.......good call.

I did exactly what you suggested and it seems to have solved the problem entirely.

Thanks a lot......I simply just did not know.

I appreciate all the thoughtful responses.
