Denon DR M22 losing speed stability halfway through

I have a denon DR M22 which begins to show speed instability, and sometimes stop as it begins to reach the end of the tape. Rollers and their spring are fine, take up reel has torque. What i noticed is that the supply reel side torque is low. When i raise the cassette while playing, the speed becomes normal

I am beginning to suspect that the tape guide at the supply side is rubbing on the pinch roller and slowing it down. I do not see a height adjustment for it, and the service manual is not very helpful

Any ideas ?

after some poking around, i suspect that the head height adjustment may be the problem - its not the tape guide. the user manual says adjust the height adjustment screw, but there is no image

some more updates - it's not the height. if i move the head below, speed improves, but then again, if i move either the supply or take up pinch roller up so that it pushes harder against the capstan, speed improves. the supply side capstan is more sensitive. Finally if i unwind the supply side spool so there is slack, and the spool doesnt have to rotate, even then the tape plays fine
