Denon DRA-700AE - no sound on one channel at certain volume levels

Hello, I just bought a 2nd hand Denon DRA-700AE that turns out to have a strange issue: no sound on the left channel whenever the master volume is at certain levels, precisely every 8 dB:

+12 dB <-> +6 dB: works
+6 dB <-> -2 dB: doesn't work
-2 dB <-> -10 dB: works
-10 dB <-> 18 dB: doesn't work
-18 dB <-> -26 dB: works
-26 dB <-> -34 dB: doesn't work
etc.

I can "offset" the values at which this happens using the "left channel volume", but the issue still consistently appears every 8 dB.
This happens with all the input sources, on both speaker (A, B) outputs and headphones.
If I crank the treble EQ all the way up (without any input source), I can hear the usual hiss in the signal appearing also in the left channel at all the volume levels, which implies the issue most likely happens before the "filter" stage.
It doesn't matter if the master volume is changed using the rotary encoder or remote control, because the volume control on this receiver seems to be all digital, done by the volume IC NJW1197, according to the unit's service manual.
I tried the factory reset, but no difference.

My assumption given the circumstances is that the issue is caused by the volume IC misbehaving. If that's indeed the case, I should probably stop trying to find a solution, but I am at this point dying just to better understand what could cause this particular behavior.

I struggled to find anyone else with this problem on the internet, but just when I was about to give up, I was relieved to find an almost identical case on this forum.

It would be great to hear your thoughts on this.
