Denon DRM-740 eating tapes

Well, my Denon DRM-740 has been put on time-out after it ate one of my XL-IIS tapes. My one saving grace was that somehow it didn't manage to mangle the tape when it did it.

Anyway, I don't want to risk putting any more tapes through it until I can figure out why it did it. I keep this deck clean and de-magged so I don't think it was caused by that.

I know the belt that engages the pinch rollers/head is loose so the deck won't always engage the first time you hit play... but when it ate the tape it was halfway through and Recording.

I was wondering what the checklist I should be going through to troubleshoot this is. Whether I need to replace a pinch roller, whether the alignment is slightly off somewhere and it is creasing the tape? Whether some other belt could be slipping that drives the capstans or the reel itself?

As a related sidequestion, where can I find parts for this deck? Partstore doesn't seem to have anything but the Service Manual, and it looks like it's on Denons list of "things that never happened" as so many cassette decks are these days...

Thanks in advance.

If one belt is loose, I would suspect that they should all be replaced.
The pinch roller would be a good move if you can obtain one of them while you're in there. :scratch2:

It needs clean and service as well as new belts. Great machine when all up to spec, so I'd do it (in fact I did, had my 740 serviced last year :) ). It is such a nice deck, it gets whatever it needs. One of my all time favorite machines - now if it were only available in silver :(

Where does one bring it to be serviced, or are there places to get parts for it?

I have the same question. I have a DRM-800A that likes to shut itself off during playback. I think it's a tape tension thing. A guy in a shop once told me that Denon has a repair operation in Syracuse NY that would fix it for a flat fee. I'd like to follow up on that. Advice?

TIA.

Well I picked up the Service manual for this. Unfortunately it's not much help as I still don't know where to actually get the parts to do this.
