Denon DVD-2910: is this a scroe?

I picked up a Denon DVD-2910 (no remote) at the Goodwill this morning for $12.99. I wouldn't even have noticed it, but I remembered reading a post recently where someone was seeking advice for a decent, used CD player, and someone had recommended that he look for a single-disc type player. The Goodwill I frequent typically has between 50-100 (mostly of the black plastic variety) CDPs, VCRs, DVD players, DVRs, etc. I usually skim through looking for the occasional receiver in the pile. Today I slowed down and looked and found this unit.

I already have a Denon DVD-1910 that I got at the same store last summer, and it didn't have the remote either. But I went back the next day and scrounged through the mountain of orphan remotes, and lo' and behold, there was a Denon remote--and it happened to be the right one! It works with this 2910. I've been using the 1910 for dedicated CD listening, but I might move it out for viewing DVDs and use the 2910 for music, since it's a better unit.

Is there anything that needs to be done to, or inspected on, these CD/DVD players, as in cleaning and so forth? I've played a couple CDs all the way through and it seems to be tracking fine. No problems so far.

The Denon 2910/2930 and 3910/3930 were and are nice quality multi-format disc players. They can often be had for bargain prices because so many owners of these units upgraded to blu-ray players.

Their main appeal is as a one box solution to playing CDs, CDRs, SACDs, DVD-audio and DVD video. If your unit still plays SACDs and DVD-As, then it was a great score IMO.

I have a 3930. It sounds good on CD and great on SACD and DVD-A. I have had no problems so far. But it does not see much use, and none as a DVD-video player. I use it mainly to play my hi-rez discs, but I've considered selling it since I have very few DVD-A discs, and I think a simpler player that plays only CD and SACD might suit my needs better.

I have read that it is not uncommon for the laser assembly to go out on these units, and that they are expensive to fix..

And that's all just fine with me, as I don't have an HD TV. I'm still using a couple honkin' Sony tube TVs (you know, the kind you hide under during a tornado ;) ). I don't watch that many movies either. I probably watch sports more than anything else, and a nice HD flat panel would be great. But I just haven't been able to bring myself to fork over the dough for one. So, as long as the Denon keeps working, it will serve me well for audio.

I have and use a Denon DVM 3700 5 disk DVD changer as my 'cd' player in the livingroom system and it sounds great. I play CD's and HDCD's through it and wow does it sound good.
